The Ms Marvel trailer

Marvel has done it again - its proven that if the film doesn't have Spider-Man in it, Phase 4 sucks. They haven't had a hit now in years and this isn't going to be one. To summarise my thoughts:

It looks cheap. Like, Netflix original movie cheap. Her superhero outfit especially.

It looks like its made for little kids despite having adult themes.

She gets her powers from a bracelet and not the terrigen mists meaning that she isn't an Inhuman.

Her power set never was all that original but it doesn't seem to be the ''Mr Fantastic'' powers that she used to have, instead its now ''glowing big blue energy fields''(?) I'm having Ryan Reynold's Green Lantern flashbacks.

She's not in shape. Sorry. You can accuse me of body shaming, but I cannot imagine her pulling off the physical activity required to be a superhero. (Unless that is why she has become a forcefield superhero? So she has to do less?)

Her personality is clearly ''Tom Holland's Spider-Man - but ITS A GIRL''. In other words, we've seen it all before.

The line ''its not for brown girls from Jersey city'' and the repeated Muslim imagery leaves me in no doubt that this film is going to also be ''Tom Holland's Spider-Man - but ITS A MUSLIM''. In other words, we've seen it all before.

The MCU post-Endgame besides Spider-Man is in real trouble.

WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If...? and Hawkeye have all been huge hits with critics, casual viewers and fans alike and while not as popular with fans Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Eternals have all been well liked by causal viewers. And in regards to Ms. Marvel most fans and casual viewers seem to be looking forward to it. You are, as always, entitled to you're opinion but as of right now, Phase 4 has been doing pretty well. Not quite as good as Phase 3 but 6 of the stories released so far have been critical hits and the other 3 have been, at the very least, decent.

I actually saw Eternals in theaters last year and the theater was PACKED and every one laughed at the jokes, got all teary eyed at the sadder moments and in the end you could hear everyone gaps when Arishem the Judge appeared. I personally thought the film was okay but when I asked everyone else what they thought everyone said they loved the film.

So, on a purely objective level, the MCU is doing just fine and most of the issues seem to be more of a result of the still ongoing pandemic which has screwed over EVERYTHING and the series being able to turn out several good stories with only a few "duds" is rather impressive.

I honestly see Phase 2 as the overall weakest phase in the MCU so far with the good in concept but questionable in execution Iron Man 3, the So Okay It's Avarge Thor: The Dark World, the kinda disappointing Avengers: Age of Ultron and the fun but a little disjointed Ant-Man. Not to mention the, IMO, overrated Jessica Jones who's first having some good ideas but I felt was hampered by it being needlessly dark with most of the cast being HUGELY unlikable.

And if we're talking about bad, Iron Fist. His first season was a slog to get through and his second was an improvement but only by a little and I felt that the Defenders was a massive let down which was not helped by Iron Fist himself being a massive idiot in the last episode.

But back to Ms. Marvel, most comments from fans on YouTube, DeviantArt and Tumblr are mostly positive with many liking Kamala Khan and how loyal she is to her comic book counterpart. I will judge the show on it's own merits but so far I don't see anything wrong with the show. Keep in mind that the moving Turning Red has been met with generally positive reviews from both critics and fans and it's trailers were kinda crap (I honestly didn't realize it was a Pixar movie until I saw Pixar's name attached to it and thought it was a Dreamwork film in the vain of Shrek).

And as I've said before, I LOVE She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and the trailer for the first season made it look like crap. I'll wait and see but so far I can't think of a single Phase 4 show or movie that's been bad so as far as I can see the MCU is doing just fine and I look forward to seeing what's next... You know, it feels good to be back. :D

Every MCU Disney+ show that came out has been a success so far, also Shang Chi actually made a profit close to Ant-Man's in the box office (without China no less and during the pandemic) and was a big hit on home media, which is really good for a less known character like Shang Chi.

The only MCU products that would be considered a disappointment were Black Widow (being released after the character was killed off in Endgame, at a really bad time during the pandemic and having it available on Disney+ at the same time definitely played a role) and The Eternals.

I'm disappointed that they changed Kamala's powers but I'm going to keep an open mind about it because I actually like the character and it seems to be taking elements from the 2014 comic series, which was a really good run that was cut short because Marvel decided to do that stupid Secret Wars event that caused all their titles to be put on hold.

the 2014 Ms. Marvel run was actually a decent seller, which was good for a brand new character even if it wasn't in the same level of a Spider-Man or Avengers series in terms of sales and even selling around the same range of the 2005 Brian Reed run on Carol Danvers Ms. Marvel and even outselling Carol's Captain Marvel series at the time (heck, by comparison she was consistently selling better than classic Static Shock comics from the 90s). But then it was put on hold along with the rest of Marvel's titles because of that stupid 2015 Secret Wars event, which affected the character's momentum. Then when everything was back to normal, the title was relaunched and she was upgraded to being an Avenger, which was still too early in the character's lifespan so a lot of development and story potential was skipped and Marvel started to really overexpose the character.

It didn't help that she wasn't handled well by other writers outside her own title and then Civil War II happened, which really hurt the character's appeal. Thus, her title's sales plummet and never saw the same level of sales of the 2014 run.

These videos delve into the character's sales history and how she was poorly handled post Secret Wars.

That feels like an exaggeration to me as it's not just been the usual unpleasables who have had issues with them and I've heard plenty of reasonable complaints from all three of those you quoted.

WandaVision threw away a lot of its potential for the standard MCU fare at the end along with more specific quibbles like the Mutants not being setup while other stuff like Invasion was being setup in a rather clunky manner, Falcon was just an utter mess with the most defence you'll see is a mix of that its intentions were good and blaming the pandemic for the many many things wrong with that show, Loki did better but there were certainly issues with Loki getting sidelined in his own show, not being consistent with him in the films and the last ep again, What If? many people absolutely hated early on (amusingly those were the eps I liked most) and even when a lot came back around on it the main word used was inconsistent with a mix of which ep was the whipping boy be it the zombies or party Thor usually, and Hawkeye probably did the best, but again you had a lot of the same complaints about how the finale went down.

So I think it's fair to say that none of the + shows have really nailed it yet in terms of reception. Though to be fair I don't think any have done quite so badly as Boba Fett did. Obviously such shows will never win over everyone, but there's been other recent examples that have done much better. Compare it to say Peace Maker where the response from fans and critics was absolutely gushing and the only dissenting voices were the weirder Snyder-bros who have to take a silly joke far too seriously.

Does that mean that Ms Marvel will suck? Honnestly I've got no clue. I watched the trailer and got that I'm absolutely not the target audience for this one as even more than What If? it feels tailored for a younger crowd, and for them I hope they really enjoy it while I give it a pass.

So it seems there's a logical progression from the first part of this quote to the second, but yeah I'll affirm that the second seems more the tone. And I don't really think it looks necessarily bad in that case.

Aligning with Spider-Man's tone, maybe. Does it look like the same theme of a nerdy white boy becoming secretly cool and heroic while also becoming somewhat less nerdy in his regular persona anyway? For me, no. I really don't see redundancy in any themes running for this trailer. It doesn't look like it has the intricate consequence theme that Spider-Man does, so I'm fairly left wondering what it does give. Maybe nothing, maybe something.

Then as far as world building, I think the Jersey reference might actually be more specific to the branching out from New York centre that not only Marvel stories but Spider-Man tend to locate at. Newark is pretty much the Blüdhaven to Gotham's New York, though I admittedly doubt we'll get such backdrop characterization in this show.

That's a shame after all of the setup they've done in the MCU that would have made this work.

I don't have any particular attachment one way or the other to her specific origin, as the origin of her powers won't affect the core of the character (from what I remember in the comics, anyway). But it's weird to go and change it when you've already laid the foundations for the original construction of the character. I wonder why they did this.

I see what you mean but in my own defense I was basing this on reaction videos and view scores from a number of review sites. Not the best way to judge a series but I do the best with what I got.

It makes sense that they are all mini series so far, but for the amount of shows that one studio is putting out, it is very consistently good. Undoubtedly it is a successful production endeavor.

I don't understand why they changed the origin and powers, but it looks good to me. Clearspira, I'm starting to think you have a bias against superheroes with "Marvel" in their name. :P
