Anthem: Does Anyone Actually Remember This?

Post by Winter »

Fun Fact: After the overall negative reception of Mass Effect: Andromeda with everyone from fans to critics making fun of its goofy looking animation, glitches, wooden acting and cringy dialogue that EA apparently told BioWare to make their next game un-memeable. And thus came Anthem, a game that was said would revolutionize gaming. A game that would win BioWare back the good will of their fans, a game that would show everyone that the BioWare magic was still intact and that the future of the company was going to be fine.

A game so good that was MORE hated by fans and critics, hardly anyone bought and because of the whole "Make it un-memeable" order was so forgettable that 3 years NO ONE remembers this game.

Seriously, no one talks this game. It's like BioWare and EA made such a big deal about it but did so badly that the series basically died. It did so badly that BioWare had to drop all planned future DLCs because no one was buying the game and even stopped upgrading the game because of how few people were playing it.

Normally I would say what a shame that is because of the game's lore and world or talk about some sort of character but, truth be told, I can't because I DON'T Remember a thing about this game!

I'm serious, there's nothing for me to point to and go, well at least that was fun, because this game gave me nothing. With MEA I feel there's more that could be done with the series and I do hope that BioWare does continue the story in the next Mass Effect game. Dragon Age 2 I felt was a great story hindered by a rushed development. Assassin's Creed 3 has the AMAZING Tyranny of King Washington Expansion Pack, Rise of the Tomb Raider has Blood Ties DLC, even Shadow of the Tomb Raider I remember because of how much I HATED it!

But Anthem... I got nothing. There is not one character here I remember, I don't recall what the plot was about and while the gameplay looked fun there wasn't really anything that made it stand out.

So, I ask you with all honesty, does anyone here actually remember this?

Yes, but not for the gameplay. The article by Jason Schreier that exposed what happened with the development is one of the most memorable bits of writing about computer games period for just how wrong it went, how executive meddling led to the one good bit (the flying), and the mis-match between what the public was being shown and what was going on behind the scenes.

I also think you're wrong that people do talk about the game in that it gets mentioned in the same kind of discussions of what's wrong with modern gaming as that EA comment about Star Wars Battlefront that was the most downvoted comment in the history of reddit.

I also appreciate the existence of Anthem as that was what first led to me watching Skill Up on youtube who did a rather good video about the game and I'm still subscribed to him now.

I only remember it because Jimquisition was on about it for a while, largely because of the Schreier article.

Nah, it was their attempt to do a looter shooter like Destiny or Borderlands, but they banned internal discussion of those games because that's just the kind of madness they thought was a good idea at the time, and so they were to some extent trying to re-invent the wheel from the ground up.
