Discussing Ideas for a Fantasia Video Game

Post by Winter »

So I was watching a le's play of the PlayStation game Journey and as I was watching it I was reminded of Disney's Fantasia as the whole game felt like something that would fit perfectly with the whole concept of the original film and than I was struct by a thought, why not make a Fantasia Video Game in the same vain as Journey?

Attempts have been made to include Fantasia in Video games however the problem here is that Musicals in Video Games is REALLY hard to do as they're often hard to pull off thanks to needing to give players something to do. A great example of this in Final Fantasy VII Remake there is a level that is Cloud dancing with Andrea Rhodea in order to get dressed in drag to infiltrate a crime bosses mansion... It makes sense in context. This part of the game is great to watch but personally I think it sucks to play as I'm often distracted by the awesome dance and forget to actually PLAY the game so it really takes me out of it.

So, if this is what is needed to pull off a dance number imagine what it takes to have a level or an entire game. Journey avoids this by having the music be controlled by the player along with having a BEAUTIFUL score that is played while going through the game. The game takes about 1 and a half to 2 hours to finish but my thought is what if we take that concept along with the idea of Fantasia and put that into a game. Have a number of segments that are like Journey where there is no dialogue or sound effects along with amazing level design and simple gameplay.

Sure, it would be hard especially when incorporating classical music but it can be done. And if Disney wants to hedge their bets they could release it in a series of DLC with someone talking about who made the song, what it means and start and end each part showing the composer conducting said music.

It's just a thought, something I would like to see that could be great AND gives fans something they've been asking for while showcasing it in a new fashion through the unique storytelling of video games. Thoughts?

You might want to check out Flower by the same studio, it has a lot more of the Fantasia vibe to it. The controls, level design, visuals, and music are all interwoven. It doesn't convey well in video though.
