Star Trek: Janeway

The current rumour mill is that Kurtzman wants to follow the final season of PIC with a series about Janeway especially given how active Mulgrew has been recently and I just wondered what your thoughts on this was.

Personally... it could be good. The thing about Janeway was, she wasn't a bad character in principle, she was a bad character in execution. Even Mulgrew herself is on record as saying that Janeway often comes off as being schizophrenic. That's true for most of the VOY cast. A de-facto season 8 of VOY could retroactively fix a lot of the problems with the likes of Neelix or Kim.

I think nowadays, given how titanically dark PIC is, the writers may not actually shy away from her mental instability. They might make her PTSD and criminal behaviour an actual plot point - and unlike with Picard - these are traits that have been already laid out a supposed to just coming out of nowhere.

I've had enough of dark and the trend to make everything as miserable as possible.

I don't really have any issue with Janeway. She'd make a good arbiter for a modern show.

Heck, she's the best thing about Prodigy.

Kate Mulgrew is a perfectly capable actress. Flemeth is utterly fantastic as a character with quite a lot of depth.

It's just Janeway was a character they never made remotely interesting the way Sisko, Picard, or Kirk was. She was always sort of generically Starfleet.

Weird fact: I'd LOVE her to actually get a fucked up bizarre backstory like, "My mother was kept locked in a closet by my abusive father because she was riddled with Victorian madness despite both of us living on free healthcare non-stigmatized Mental illness Earth."

Because that's at least SOMETHING for her.

Is that an endorsement or a condemnation of the show?

The former. She almost single-handedly makes that one feel like Star Trek rather than some generic Nickelodeon cartoon.

Mulgrew always did a great job playing the character. The flaws in the character of Janeway all came from the writers, not her.

All around I think TNG is the most interesting inclusive of Picard. Shatner's a magnificent actor, though I don't think Kirk's writing necessarily holds up by itself.

As far as Janeway, I think her arc was somewhat subtle but rather textured compared to anyone, save maybe Sisko who both started more subtle and went more extreme than Janeway.

I view Voyager as an early example of the decline of writing quality in genre television and movies.

The idea could be excellent if written well, but I don't expect that to occur.

Oddly, I'd say that Prodigy has a better janeway than Voyager. It may not be incredibly DEEP characterization but I can oddly say that I 100% know who Holo Janeway is as a person and what motivates her versus Show Janeway.
