Celebrating Pride Month: What "Love Triangles" Would be Best Served by Becoming Polyamory?

Because why not?
First on the list is
Midna, Zelda and Link.
This is mainly inspired by the Manga Adaptation of Twilight Princess which had Link and Midna being written as romantic partners with the two straight up kissing at the end of the series. As someone who's always been a Link/Midna shipper this was kinda a dream come true as, for the most part, I've never been much of a Link/Zelda shipper. However, there is one exception to this which was Skyward Sword which is my overall favorite Zelda game when it comes to story and I found Link and Zelda's relationship in that game to be rather wholesome.
But what gave me the idea of the trio entering into a Polyamory Relationship was a minor subplot in the manga. See in the Manga the story includes a retcon that Zelda and Midna knew one another since they were kids (there was a pool that allowed the two worlds to talk to one another) and the scenes almost play out as if the two had developed romantic feelings for one another.
This combined with the manga making Link/Midna canon along with Link and Zelda's ongoing "Are they, Aren't they?" shtick made me think that maybe they would work best together. And I personally think they would be kinda badass. I mean you got the knight in shining armor along with two kickass princesses. Hell considering that Ganon stole his part of the Triforce Midna could be made to be the barer of the Triforce of Power. Honestly I'm surprised that this pairing isn't more common given how popular the three are.
Cloud, Aerith and Tifa
This is one that resulted after I played Final Fantasy VII Remake. I always saw the Cloud/Aerith/Tifa Love Triangle as the best example of HOW to write of LT as while Aerith and Tifa clearly both having feelings for Cloud they remained friends and remained focused on the Mission which was thankfully carried over to great effect in FF7R1 and if anything it was improved in Remake. The Remake includes a ton of new scenes between the three that helps to buildup their friendship more along with Cloud's feelings for both of them but also has a bunch of moments that show Aerith and Tifa getting along REALLY Well while ALSO being supportive and kind to Cloud.
It got to the point where I was wondering "Ar-Are these two falling in love with each other AND Cloud?"
Of course, according to the developers, the story of the Remake Trilogy will remain loyal to the original so there's no way to change that but I do think it would be interesting if this was made canon in another series. I mean Kingdom Hearts is likely going to be going on for a while and Aerith is still alive and well in that series and Tifa is there too.
Just saying.
Peter, MJ and Felicia
Peter has a ridiculously long list of love interests with a grand total of 15 over the last few decades. However, his most famous ones are Mary Jane Watson, Felicia Hardy and Gwen Stacy. Now, to step on a few toes for a moment I've never been a big fan of Peter and MJ. I know, I know I've sinned but I've never had any interest in this pairing. I found MJ to be as boring as dishwasher soup in Spider-Man: The Animated Series, I REALLY disliked her in the Raimi Trilogy and I keep forgetting her in the comics. That's started to turn around in recent years as I Really liked her in the PS4 Spider-Man game and her MCU version is one of my favorite characters in the Spider-Man films.
I had an even lower interest in Gwen as I didn't even really know anything about her and only became interested in her in the Amazing Spider-Man films and by that point I was more of a Gwen and Gloria shipper (not into Miles and Gwen, sorry).
My favorite Romance for Peter has honestly always been Peter and Felicia as I always had more fun with the two. Sure, they've had their ups and downs but I always felt like more could be done and, well, I've always had a thing for the Dating Catwoman Trope.
However, let's be real here, Peter and MJ is the most popular pairing in the fandom with Peter and Felicia only ever coming in second place.
However, I think a lot could be gained by having the three of them hook up and it's not outside the realm of possibility. MJ has also had a large number of love interests outside of Peter and more then a few of them have been women. Sure, some of that is alternate universes but I think it's been implied that MJ is bisexual in the 616 universe and I'm also pretty sure that Felicia is also bi.
I honestly think that if not for them being romantic rivals for Peter's love the two would get along just fine and, well, Felicia's interest in Peter is never going to go away no matter how writers try.
And on side note while I've never been the biggest Peter/MJ fan what was done to them in One More Day was stupid and an insult to both characters. Even as someone who was never into this I hated that Marvel broke them up and broke them up LIKE THAT!!! I mean WTF?!?! And last I checked that deal is still ongoing and hasn't been undone.
So with that in mind I think it would be interesting if we just went for option 3 and had Peter remarry MJ and have the two bring Felicia into their little family. Let's be honest, this would be the least ridicules thing to happen in the Spider-Man Series.
Sasha, Anne and Marcy
This is honestly not only one I think would work but one that may actually happen in the future given comments by the series' creator and the fact that this is the most popular pairing in the fandom. I honestly have nothing else to really add in this one as the three are kinda perfect for one another and there's a good chance of it happening at some point in the future. Next OTT.
Dick, Barbara and Kory
This is one I'll admit has always been a personal favorite of mine. I've always been a big shipper of both Dick and Kory along with Dick & Barbara and I think that's the case for most of the fandom. Oh sure much like his father Dick has a LOT of lovers but in the end it always comes down to these two as his main if not only ones.
Now it would be a bit harder to justify this as Barbara is, as far as I know, straight and I don't know of any AU's where she's in a romance with women. Same thing could apply to Kory as she's only ever shown interest in men.
However, it should be noted that in DC canon Tamaranians DO engage in Polyamory relationships. As far as I know this wasn't retconned this was apparently always the intent so that should be kept in mind. Now I could see Kory being bi or pan and that it's just never come up because she hasn't been attracted to any of the women that she's met. Being bi or pan doesn't mean you're a sexual deviant who will sleep with anything that moves it just means you can be attracted to anyone of any gender.
Sure Kory did sleep around with people she just met but that was part of a stupid story that everyone agrees never happened and should be ignored at all costs. And her kissing people was just her alien way or learning different languages.
As for Barbara I actually think there's an interesting story that could be told her.
In The Old Republic several expansion packs had characters who were straight romance options only and had them become bi options later. The most notable examples of characters that have already been covered over on Chuck's reviews are Kira and Jessa.
To quote TV Tropes
"Reality Is Unrealistic: Vanilla game Love interests returning for the expansions as bisexual (LS!Jaesa, Nadia, Kira, Scourge, etc) was criticized by some players as unnecessary retcons, but the reasons many returning companions give for not being romantically available before (slowly discovering their sexuality, not being aware of their feelings for the Player Character until it was too late, believing the Player Character saw them as Just Friends, etc.) feels very true-to-life to the experience of a lot of LGBTQ+ people."
I honestly think it would be interesting to tell a story of Barbara, (while she's still Batgirl) teaming up with Dick and Kory as a Trio of Superheroes who protect Bludhaven which has Babs slowly coming to realize that she not only still has feelings for her old flame but is also developing feelings for Kory too. It could honestly be an interesting story to explore as the three come to realize their feelings for each other.
And that's my list. These are the relationships I think would, in all honesty, benefit from going Polyamory, it would necessarily be out of character for anyone and could greatly enhance all the characters if done right.
Happy Pride!
