Sounds like season 2 was also in post. THIS SUCKS BALLS! Between it and SNW I almost want to say it is the better show.
What does this mean for Trek as a whole?

Star Trek is just fine. SNW season 2, there's a Seven of Nine show confirmed, a Section 31 show (I doubt it'll happen but they say it will).
FYI, I don't watch the show, i'm drawing this opinion based on what i've seen. And what i've seen is no one talking about Prodigy compared to SNW or LD. I don't think it got wide enough traction, simple as that.

I haven't watched Prodigy yet. I always wondered where these kids were at to make the show profitable.
Honestly felt that it is as destined to fail due to thd limited demographic it had.

I only watched the body swap episode after getting a strong reccomendation, but man that episode was really excellent and showed they had potential to do some quality here.
Apparently s2 might air still which is at least something but it's dependent on someone buying it off Paramount.

If they've made it what have they got to lose by showing it? We're talking streaming so it's not as if it's even an expensive TV slot, just a little bit of bandwidth on their servers.

I'm saddened by this. I watched Prodigy and really enjoyed it.
I think cancellation was a mistake. Even if it's not hugely popular it's acted as a gateway to bring newcomers into the franchise, which is something we really need. It does a great job of being accessible and I find the characters really enjoyable.
Also, seeing animation get axed always makes me nervous.

It's not just cancelled, they're going to remove season 1 from Paramount+ so it can't be viewed anywhere.

They must be super hard up for cash if they think they can make more by selling it (and the first season too) than anything they can make by keeping it on their servers.

It involves paying the residuals and the overhead of paying the residuals.

Apparently, at least according to one twitter thread from one of the staff I saw posted elsewhere, it wasn't down to that or a tax write off this time, but down to Paramount thinking they'll make more selling it off than doing more with it or just keeping it on their servers.
