The Boys/Gen V series

Post by clearspira »

Anyone here watch these shows? What is your opinion?

Personally, not my cup of tea at all although I can see why people like it. I'm just so soured on ''realistic superheroes'' or ''deconstructed heroes'' or ''asshole heroes'' etc. I just want to see heroes saving people. I think that's one of the reasons why the MCU worked over the DCEU at least to begin with. Fun Captain America vs dark Superman.

I mean, that's a bit like going into Batman and complaining about how it's dark and brooding. The Boys is four seasons of "superheroes are metaphors for awful corporate produced celebrity behavior and the military industrial complex." It's pretty much it's brand.

Which is fine if it's not your cup of tea but don't go looking for the exact opposite of it.

OTOH, Gen V is kind of "meh" on my end as the characters don't really have the likability of the Boys. I don't think any of the students have the memorability of either the villains or the heroes.

Same here. I read the first issue of The Boys back when it was new. It was so despicable I never read any more of it, and had no interest in a television adaptation. Ennis's torture/gore fascination does not appeal to me, and the deconstruction felt superficial and redundant already in 2006.

The show is about 25% Ennis versus 100% Ennis and actually has interesting things to satirize unlike the comic's hate fest on superheroes.

You should never go more than 25% Ennis.

The Boys comic is pretty damn disgusting I have to agree. It went the ''Enterprise'' route of confusing adult with swearing and sex. The show did a reasonable job of reigning a lot of that in.

The opening is memorable though i'll give it that. If the Flash lived in a world with half-realistic physics he would indeed be ripping people's limbs off all over the place. Getting hit by him would be like getting hit by a cannon.

He was on drugs at the time he may not have had the awareness to move out of the way before he obliterated her.

I like The Boys. Not because of the anti-Superman which has been done to death now, but the idea of a corporation making these supes as basically publicity stunts and making movies. Also some real world physics like Homelander admitting he cannot land a plane by himself with his powers because it would tear itself apart.

Yes there is shock, sex, gore, and everything in between. They do like to up the ante each season such as the 'Antman Solution', a dude with a super penis he can control, superhero orgy with normals etc.
I got nothing to say here.

GEN V is...okay.

But the problem is Gen V clearly struggles with parodying its source material. The X-men already had sex, teen angst, powers that killed their parents, and body issues.

"Oh, they're experimenting on us in secret" is just the plot of the fucking New Mutants movie.

Any good though. It's in my list to watch.

Just finished the series.

****Spoilers****

I actually liked it and honestly I didn't expect the ending. I figured out that eventually there would have been an uprising over the humans or at least the school itself from the inmates. I actually thought towards the end, the main characters would have prevailed and Vaught would have hailed them as heroes. Didn't expect Homelander to actually show up in the show but once he did I knew he would flip for the supes.

Cricket is interesting to me. The actress and obviously the character is a beautiful woman. She is cute, quirky and fun. Honestly someone you want to be around with and be with in any normal circumstance. But she is an outcast because of her abilities. She has the looks but her abilities isn't that great especially how she does it. Which shows that despite being a beautiful woman it's all about the abilities in the school. In the end, I think it implies that it's not her purging or gorging of food but her mental health that controls her abilities. Something that plays with her controlling mother who actually taught her how to purge to get small in the first place.

Maria. The girl with the blood powers. I knew from the beginning she wasn't tapping into her powers. She has one of the most powerful powers so far I have seen in this universe. Which she eventually uses in the finale to an extent. I think she is fully capable of stopping Homelander, by attacking his blood. Maybe moving the blood away or something from the heart as opposed to stopping the heart. Her character is the most human and IMO the most predictable. The hero.

I would go on with the other characters but I can do that later.

Honestly I don't care if this is just some rip-off of the X-Men. The entire universe is a rip-off of the comics universe. The way they do it, is more interesting to me. I actually cared about the characters in this show. I actually like how the school was not setup to train, educate and control their powers, but all about how they can contribute to Vaught's bottom line. Basically celebrities with powers.

I do wonder how many more actors we will see from the Supernatural series. So far we got three. Jensen Ackles, Jim Beaver and Alexander Calvert. Misha Collins sounds like this could be up his alley playing a reporter or some groveling assistant to someone.
I got nothing to say here.
