Once again, it's obvious that I'm a fan of this character so me talking about her shouldn't come as a surprise for anyone here.
So, just learned that storyboards for the cancelled Tomb Raider Sequel to the 2018 movie had Sam in it. She only appears in one or two panels but the fact that she's there at all is very interesting as it would make Sam one of only five characters to appear in both the games and the movies besides Lara (the others are Himiko, Ana, Richard and Amelia).
The fact that Sam was set to appear before the film got canned is just so interesting, especially again how everyone was kinda building it up. Before the film was cancelled Alicia Vikander along with the writer of the movie and director were making a big deal about a female character who was going to interact with Lara and play a major role in the film. Now based on the Storyboard panels there are 3 women of note (not counting Lara) which was Sam, Ana and Unuratu. It could be that the filmmakers were talking about Unuratu as she does seem to be in more of the storyboards but given Sam's popularity it also could have been her.
Until we get more info I'm going to just head canon that this was going to be about Lara and Sam. But again the fact that Sam was going to be in this film at all speaks volumes to just how popular she is. Zip and Winston are mainstays of this series and they've yet to appear in any of the films (no the 2000 films don't count those characters just share jobs with Zip and Winston, they don't have the characters personalities or names so they're different characters).
As a fan of this character I'm just giddy that she was going to be in one of the films. Not sure if they would have done her justice but this does continue to show that Sam has a much larger and more passionate fanbase then the haters claim.
