How much does Star trek Discovery help a new Trek game coming out?

I have the itch. I would prefer a Mass Effect type RPG or some sort of special forces focused shooter.

We'd be VERY lucky to get a Star Trek RPG, or even a nice strategy or ship combat sim. We'll probably get an action shooter if anything though.

Well, Stellaris has a lot of Trek-ish elements, but that's probably not what you're looking for. Has there ever been a Trek game that was genuinely good in most areas? STO is OK, but I would think a lot less of it if I had to pay for it.

I'd love to see a new Elite Force-like game come out, I played those games so many times back in the day, even if it felt like a generic console shooter it would be fun to blast aliens in the Star Trek universe again.

Fuck shooters. They're pretty much the least interesting thing you can do with a Trek game, out of all the obvious choices.

Why?

Because the setting and the tech. don't really lend themselves to shooters as well as, say, something like Star Wars.

And because you can tell more interesting stories in an RPG.

Star Trek Armada 1 and 2, Birth of the Federation, Star Trek 25th Anniversary, Judgement Rites, Bridge Commander. There are good ST games out there, though some of them might be a bit outdated in terms of handling (both TOS point and clicks are fairly clunky by modern standards). It stands to reason, that both Elite Force 1 and 2 were pretty good games as well, though they are somewhat "unstartreky", given their subject, though the same is true for the Armada series and I can't recall anyone ever hating on them. Hell, I can highly recommend Klingon Academy and even it's predecessor, Starfleet Academy (KA is the technologically superior game by far though).

The genre really doesn't matter, it's the execution that does. Thief and Dishonored are basically only ego shooters and they still bring a lot of depth with them. As long as the game doesn't just fall victim to the stereotypical tropes, it can be a great game.

Why doesn't the setting lend itslef to shooters? What about tech does not lend itself? I expecvt the action in new Trek to look better than Voyager and what came before.

What are you talking about? The Thief games aren't shooters, even the most recent one, whilst certainly egotistical in many ways, wasn't really a shooter. Dishonoured, whilst certainly an egotistical power fantasy, is not a shooter.
