Well the "liberals" seem to have little tolerance for any behaviour that doesn't tick their box either.

The real issue is that society all too often's retreated to childishly simplistic extremes, my way or the highway thinking, you either completely agree with me or you're scum who shouldn't be listened to or treated like a proper human being, with no ability to distinguish between those who that's a fair assessment of and those who you simply disagree with.

That’s not the “middle” of it. The people you’re referring to aren’t speaking for one side’s values, they are responding to what the other side commonly asserts. Both sides have rhetoric, and the rhetoric is subject to miscommunication. There is commonly enough people that understand their own side’s values and principles, but they are MORE likely to misunderstand the other side in that case.

I don't believe they really understand their own position quite honestly, they usually give a pretty simple-minded view of it. But misunderstanding the other's is common enough. It's deliberate misunderstanding mind you, there's no willingness whatsoever to try to empathise; indeed, there's usually horror at the very idea ("but they're scum! I'm not going to stoop to that!")

Cultural values in general are the main crux of not only controversy but general marketing around commerce as well.

Claiming there isn't usually comes across as claiming that there's no real controversy because everyone agrees with me, other than few bits of scum just out to loudly cause trouble. In short it's smug arrogance.
