Ebert gave each of the original trilogy 4 out of 4. He called Empire Strikes Back the best of the trilogy, but that review came years later during the rereleases before TPM. Siskel did give a positive review at the time.
Siskel and Ebert weren't particularly disdainful of sci-fi from what I've seen, but as "mainstream" reviewers I wouldn't expect their interests or perspective to line up with those of hardcore sci-fi fans. The disparity between critic and fan reaction toward The Last Jedi is one of the more extreme recent examples I can think of where two different audiences emphasize different things.
