I once got called a racist for making fun of flat earthers... by a white guy.

Nothing I said suggested I was mocking anyone of race or gender. So yeah.
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

Just about every adjective with a negative connotation in the English language seems to be losing its meaning. It's all turning into 250+ words for 'you stink'.

And hell a lot of the positive and even neutral terms are going that way, too.

Such groups always exist on a spectrum - the dumbest ones do indeed say stuff like "if you jump on top of the train, you'll fall back", "water would fly off like when you spin a tennis ball" or "it's not gravity it''s buoyancy" - the smartest ones talk about how the Earth curve is an illusion from air light distortion, bring up supposed cases where ships didn't disappear behind the horizon, or claim passenger airplanes don't fly over Antarctica and no one's been confirmed to cross it etc.

As always, the smartest members of a "kook faction" can't be taken down even by educated people - higher expertise is required.

Why in the name Sobek would anyone bother to fake the Earth being round?
What would be the benefit?
It's lack of trust.

Trust is increasingly at a premium and the symptoms of its lack are apparent in most everything plaguing us in our times. A good example of that is how every international incident is now declared a false flag right away, which if taken to its logical point if they were all orchestrated as suspected, boils down to a simple thing: Nothing is how it seems, you cannot be sure of anything.

This isn't a simply matter of fear or anything, but withdraw, and I fear technology is a major driver in worsening things as it allows people to isolate but maintain enough contact to maintain hostilities so they are both far from their enemies but close enough to feel threatened by them.

Strong opining here.

What about them is so appealing as far as your take here?
They're easy to attack, that's why (Which is also why they're often so bloody hard to convince otherwise, they're so used to being dumped on).

I have poeple in my life who look on all events as just another step in some plan by groups planning to do sinister things. I roll my eyes and argue with them, but fundamentally they're good people doing real good in the world, and if that's the worst they're doing in life, then I don't give a fuck even if it annoys me.

Words have meanings independent of their strict definitions. This is the foundation behind the Euphemism Treadmill: You cannot make a nice word for someone that's mentally deficient because people don't look on it as a good thing, so any new word acquires negative connotations.

In the case of racism, it's code for you being a bad person by being an asshole to someone in much the same way many Americans use "African-American" as their word for "Black person".
Mecha82 wrote: Thu Apr 16, 2020 12:39 pm Flat-Earthers are either stupid or religious nutcases that still believe everything written in bible to be true or literal. Look while I respect AJ Styles as pro wrestler he is flat-earther (alongside with some other views) and I can't respect that about him.
That's an interesting bias filter there.

Oh wow btw I meant appalling. I'm really not used to using that word and my Chrome spell check is working only as good as an NES in a dust storm.

I had said it's a popular way to rebel against the system. Similar to the phenomenon we have now where media distrust is at an all-time high, since they want to tell us how to think, not tell us the news, and let us decide for ourselves. That's why I think all these polls cannot be trusted. I just think it's going to be a repeat of 2016.

I do feel bad for FEs, though. There is a way to convince them. Laughing at them is not that.

My opinion is that only 1% of so-called flat earthers actually exist. The other 99% are trolls.

And of that 1%, all of them are religious.

I wouldn't say it's 1%, but this applies to many many positions on the internet.

So often it feels like most people are taking sides more like in a sports game than over actual disagreements over viewpoints that are important to them. By that, I mean that the positions don't ultimately matter in the end and are dropped outside of the arguments.

The one with the ice wall model, nah don't think they're religious - more of a conspiracy thing.

Also i'd like to briefly add to my previous post here, that a lot of "round earthers" are in fact, and many of them aren't quite aware of that, not any smarter than the flat earthers; especially not the smarter ones among them.

So for that reason I appreciate the existence of fringe positions like this - by challenging people's core views concretely rather than theoretically, the one or other individual is pushed to question what and how much he really knows, and how, as opposed to just absorbing the public's views on things.
