Imagine two five-letter words, which contain mutually exclusive letters and which, ideally, cover all vowels (two vowels per word suffice, as you can conclude whether the fifth is used fairly easily). In the first two steps you'll generally get a good idea which letters are in the word and which are not. Wordle is just a variant of a very old code-guessing game I played when I was a whole lot younger, where you had to figure out a five-digit colour-combination in so many steps. The same strategies apply, though having an extensive vocabulary helps, as that may be the biggest obstacle.

On hard difficulty you have to utilize all your clues, so you can't just come up with a sheer elimination pattern necessarily easy.

This can be extremely dire if you have one letter to guess and there's like 5 words left that it could be.
