Maybe, but I'm wary of anything somebody positively asserts about human prehistory. They got around the male physical strength advantage to form a matriarchy is a rather clever way: every time a male tries something against a female, EVERY other female in the group attacks that male. He is a match for one or two females but he isn't a match for all of them.
I am not advocating that in real life, but I don't think its unrealistic to say it could not have worked in real life either.
Knowledge of the day: Humans are genetically closer related to both Bonobos and Chimpanzees, than either of those to each other.
