Fusion does have toxic (well, radioactive) byproducts but they're a lot less troublesome than those fission produces. There isn't as much radioactive waste from fusion and the radioactive waste isn't as long-lived as the worst of the fission products.

As to when we'll have commercially viable fusion reactors here, much less ones we can land on Mars...

It was hampered considerably by the fact it was NUCLEAR fusion, and thus that automatically made it terrible and a Chernobyl waiting to happen and it’ll lay waste to the planet for millions of years and yadda yadda alarmist hippie crap any time anything has the term ‘nuclear’ in it. We should already *have* these actually generating a net power gain, but we got stalled for thirty years because of people not knowing what fusion actually means.
