I recently made my way through "Theodore Rex," which focuses on the exploits of TR during his time as President. It's interesting to learn things like how we actually came pretty close to war with Germany in 1905. Of course, that bit of history was intentionally buried to avoid embarrassing Germany, apparently. It was also interesting to learn how much of a diplomat TR was, which makes it somewhat unfortunate that he's largely remembered as a cowboy, as that was only one small aspect of his character.

Roosevelt's abilities as a diplomat were second to none.
If he had won the presidential election over Wilson WWI would have unwound faster and WWII wouldn't have happened.

"shadow of victory" Is actually part of the Shadow series and while it takes place in the Honorverse it isn't part of the core story
More of a side story about other characters

And I agree about "A Rising Thunder" It ends so Abruptly and is so much shorter than others in the series that I thought I'd gotten a Glitch and was missing half the book and it felt that only half the story had been told

And from reviews I've read "Shadow of Victory" is more rehashing of the Previous Shadows book and "A Rasing Thunder"

I have been going through George MacDonald Fraser's "Flashman Chronicles" about a British Cavalry officer of no redeeming moral character Forest Gumping his way through the important historical events of the Victorian Era, while most everyone who does not really know him thinks he is a gallant hero. It is rather funny and based on decent history.

I've never read that series but I strongly recommend it's sf spiritual successor the Ciaphas Cain (HERO OF THE IMPERIUM!!) series. The premise is similar in that the main character is selfish and a coward (although it's debatable how much a coward he is considering some of the stuff he does) but is viewed by almost everyone as a gallant selfless hero (there's even one world which has an officially sanctioned splinter religion that views him as a prophet) and often involves him having to go into danger just to keep up that heroic façade (and whenever he manages to go to somewhere safer it always ends up being the more dangerous option which just feeds back into the heroic image when he pulls through). It's a highly entertains series and offers a fresh and hilarious taken on the setting which spawned the phrase 'grimdark'.

I've been rereading Crime and Punishment. I've been meaning to read Good Omens and a few other books, but I've found it hard to get started on any book recently.

You know what is better than the movie "2001 A Space Odyssey"?

The book. Maybe it is just me, but reading explanations and background information on what is happening and why is so much better than just staring at a scene while score plays for minutes on end.

The Caveman portions of the story are some of my favorite things I have ever had in a book.
