Airplanes are, by and large, meant to fly. Pounds count. Tanks are, by and large, not meant to fly, except when carried by really big airplanes, and mostly rely on very thick armor to be tank-y. If your tank flies and your airplane doesn't, you should probably be designing other things.

Meet the GAU-8, an airplane-mounted gun meant to chew through tanks. That always impressed me from a technical perspective.

Before removing the gun from the A-10, mechanics have to put a jack under the tail so the plane won't tip over. When it fires it supposedly sounds less like brrrrrrt and more like a giant zipper opening up, and with similar implications for how your day is going to go.

And I'm just sayin', if Admiral X can own a tank...
