The Pros of Cons

Post by PerrySimm »

Have you been to a few fan conventions?

What's a fun panel topic you can recall?

Do you like cons with insider or celebrity guests, or do you have a liking for fan-panelists and/or crowd-participation?

What do you like about your fandom IRL?

As this is a "PRO" thread, stay positive - con horror stories and other disagreements go elsewhere.

I've only ever managed to attend a few local cons, one of them being the local edition of Wizard World, but I mostly stopped because of not having enough money to buy vendor things that I wanted to buy. Mostly artwork and prints and such. I'd go to certain panels if I found guests interesting, but checking out artists is usually the reason I'd go.

IMO local cons are a lot of fun, it's fandom for the fans for the main part. There's also that happy middle ground you get with a regional con, where there's a little bit of everything.

I went to a Trek Convention last August. The pros are meeting different types of people and seeing how the actors are in real life. (Uhura, Nog, Paris and Mayweather were pretty nice, Troi was eccentric).

I greatly enjoyed going to TusCon in Tucson. Entry was limited to 500 tickets and it had a nice community feel.

I used to go to Paramount's Great America regularly. The Santa Clara convention center is pretty close to it, and one time I saw that Jonathan Frakes was gonna be there and it'd be cool to go check it out even though I wasn't as much a Star Trek fan as I am now.

Great America though would take a great deal of time out of the day. And the fact that I was 9 or 10 years old meant I wasn't really able to render arrangement plans to go there as well as Great America, so I didn't end up going. That's the extent of my convention experience.
