I got a bit honked off at an LGBT article I saw that said it's nowhere near as "queer" as people remember since it made the LGBT characters stereotypes, but that fails on one level - EVERYTHING and EVERYONE was at some level a borderline farcical stereotype. Sicily, land of vendettas, lovemaking, and goat milk. Like I would take great offense at how they are representing Minnesotans, as simpleton farmers that eventually grow to seem like a land of people born of incest (which is one joke the show at some point makes). That said, don't let that get in the way of the way the show was actually progressive. Casualizing the LGBT community, gay marriage, and transgenders under the height of REAGAN. Which was very brave, cuz they could've been yanked from the air. And yet being progressive on loads of other issues of the day, without being ham-fisted, and being very funny. I love the show.

I’ve never watched the show regularly, although it was a staple of afternoon reruns growing up and I remember thinking them good.

However! CA alum Pushing Up Roses has made it a regular feature of her channel, and it’s great.

Yeah, I think the "poking fun at and representing people as stereotypes" is something you need to overlook, if you watch it, since if you do... then it's really one of the most progressive, egalitarian shows out there, and for its time, its even more revolutionary - challenging AIDS shaming, and showing casual gay marriage (like it is for het people) on TV when it was decades before it became legal. And some young self-proclaimed LGBT keyboard warrior is complaining? Wha?
