DS9 - Soldiers of the Empire

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Somebody on Tv Tropes thinks the same way. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/ ... fTheEmpire

I don't really understand why this is so hard for the current showrunners. Especially when the drive seems to be to build a working franchise that can support expansive worldbuilding.
Let face it the idea of klingons was originally just twirling mustache bad guys. The movies took that idea and gave us space vikings. Next generation took it a step farther and started to work the culuture. No longer were they just a twirling mustache now they had a honor code that they tend to follow.. some of the time, but they make great emphasis on how important it was. A bit different from how they were presented originally, but cause we only seen them a few time in the original series mostly in combat the change is not worth screaming about and add to the race. The fact we see many Klingon not bother with honor the same way worth worf hold himself when on the bridge it keep us from having whiplash from the change. So these changes don't conflict too much from the original series and are just an addition. This particular episode take it a step further showing that a Klingon can know fear and can hesitate and sometime need reminding.

These little thing just add to a race and stop making them one dimensional bad guy of the week.

I think the main reason is that from Season 3 of TNG through the end of DS9 (and possibly beyond), the writing teams of the shows and movies related with each other enough to (even if only sub-consciously) not alter things that other people did. Someone would pick up a new script and say "Oh, Klingons don't act like that" or "This contradicts how X happened" and so on. Contradictions with TOS were easily avoidable because TOS had a great deal of temporal separation (both in-show and in reality), and there was a lot less of it.

2010s Trek has the problems of:
-> They are generally setting their shows very close in time to the other shows.
-> There's 25 seasons of 90s Trek.
-> Hardly any of the writing staff from the 90s is working on 2010s Trek.

Well, by the TGLS small world wiki rule, there's a reasonable chance that Laeril wrote that caption, or at least read it first.

I think they're just turning the Klingons into the Protoss from StarCraft.

A lot of is that the choices with the Klingons just feel so drastic and out there it leaves one to wonder why they're being used for their roles in the story for any reason beyond being a familiar race to the general audience. I mean I'll give Enterprise a lot of crap for how they handled Vulcans but at least the Xindi were an original alien menace specific to that show and created to fit the stories they were going for in Season 3 rather than crowbarring in another group because the were well known.

The people who made DS9 were fans of Star Trek. They loved building on existing Trek.

The current people making what they are legally allowed to call Star Trek have basically watched The Cage, and couldn't be bothered to watch any further, they just read wiki articles about anything further. Or more likely have an intern read the wiki, then sum it up. They are not fans of Trek, and only see it as a way to virtue signal while making money.

I don't know if you need to be a fan of something to write about it, since being a fan might come with it own baggage but familiar with it at least.

It can be a sticky situation.

Nicolas Meyer is probably the best you can get as a non-fan. Arguably just as important as Berman.

That is easier to do when things have not been filled in so completely.
I still think that Klingons are shallow compared to the boatloads of lore that exist for other fictional cultures like Middleearth and the Imperium of Man, but they are at least in the top 5 for Star Trek which has dozens of societies.

This is why I dislike prequels like Enterprise or Rogue One. All they can do is retread old material or over explain things that did not need explaining. Just do another time skip and then introduce a new society. The Dominion, the various Delta Quadrant societies, or just develop Federation societies that have not gotten the limelight like the Tellarites.

honestly I think that's one thing I would credit Enterprise with in its best moments, despite Andorians existing in Star Trek from the very early days it was the first one to really DO anything with them, and of course the entire season 3 arc, while not without problems overall, was premised around a divided and complex society as antagonists.

(Why they decided to spend the entire first half of the show doing EVEN MORE VULCANS, and in a way that was guaranteed to piss off some fans even if they did it well, is beyond me.)
