Better comparison would be Royal Navy sailing ship (or US doesn't matter), hunting down a pirate ship where both ships get hit by a hurricane driving them so far off course that they havd no idea where they are. Like pre-1492 age of sail. The pirate ship is destroyed, and the Royal Navy ship lost crew as well, so the pirates are given the option to come on board to go home. Full knowing it may take years to get home.
