Sf Debris Review of Star Trek The Next Generation Season 1, Episode 19 Coming of Age Aired March 14, 1988

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

The Dominion's strength was NOT showing this was total war till the very end, because if they did threaten the Alpha Quadrant with total war... the Alpha Quadrant would STOMP THEM. They had to form deals and trades and peace agreements. Remember, the moment the Romulans joined the Federation and Klingons... they won. It took a while, but the moment the Romulans joined, the three parties only suffered ONE real defeat, and were just victory after victory.
I only used the 900 billion figure because we don't know the actual number. Could be 2 trillion or 3 trillion. Who knows. But 900 billion figure worked just fine when comparing to the US Military annual recruiting/officer commissioning.

Just a numbers game really.
I got nothing to say here.

Gene's vision of the 24th century is such a wonderful cokehead dream. Not only is it apparently super difficult for getting entry into Starfleet Academy, but there are also 11 year olds that take calculus.

I watched Hollow Pursuits today AKA the introduction of Reg Barclay. I wonder how he made it through the Academy exams? We all love him, but the man is a nervous wreck at the best of times. Having him face his worst fears under exam conditions? I dunno, I just don't see it. This episode is best confined to Early Instalment Weirdness and be done with it.

Also, something else occurs to me. Isn't this a test that'll only work once? The next time you apply for the academy you'll be expecting your instructor to pull some kind of troll move on you.

Here's a suggestion for an Academy test: Starfleet's continuing mission is to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before. So with that in mind, how about a simulated First Contact on the Holodeck? Manufacture a randomly generated creature in a randomly generated environment and see how your inductee deals with it.

Honestly, season 2 and after of TNG... pretended this shit doesn't exist, so I refuse to count later Trek. I WILL mock season 1 TNG with their endless supply of idiots and losers!
Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.

That's a good point. Not even using Coming of Age as an example of what Starfleet Academy would look like. I am sure Barclay would excel with academically that involves school work. But I wonder how he would do in simulated or real time tests for command, engineering etc.

Like I wonder if he realized then, during holodeck exercises that he had no fear of his peers and would be able to order them to their death or something like that.
I got nothing to say here.

McAvoy would it be much trouble to link the reviews and maybe indicate which franchise the episode belongs to?
Khaless would rather die than live under Molor's tyranny.
