Yeah, the show treats the Minbari in general with kid-gloves, "how glorious, how noble, how romantic", but Chuck doesn't put up with their bullshit. Not that I think he would "eviscerate" her, I mean he'll still (probably) come on the side that she's still a hero. But I do think he'd emphasize the more cynical motives attributed to her.

Am I the only one that would like to see a proper examination of Janeway and Archer? One that goes beyond their parody versions? (and yes, I do realise that I just went against the title by naming two Trek characters lol).

Both Delenn and Sheridan get let off easy and treated as heroes despite the increasing unease they build up around them to consolidate their power. Yes, they generally had the best interests of others in mind, but they were... complicated. I don't think the show appropriately recognizes that enough and instead chooses to deify them, so there's a lot there to unpack in such an essay.

I like the character biographies, but I'd also like to see a character that is a little more ambiguous. There is nuance to characters like Spock or Dukat, but for a ten minute video there doesn't seem to me to be enough time to do much other than recap what anybody who saw the episodes already knows about that character. Or to put it differently, I'd like to see more chances for Chuck to give his opinions on characters, their motivations, etc. For example, a character like Deckard in Blade Runner has a lot more ambiguity to him than the typical Star Trek character.
Delenn might be a good choice, or someone like Kosh.

Yeah, I'm right in the middle of season 4 in a rewatch, and they really missed a great opportunity with Garibaldi. It's really difficult for a writer to create a situation where two established heroes have a real conflict with two legitimate, differing viewpoints without the drama feeling forced or artificial. The maddening thing is that Garibaldi should have a valid (if not entirely correct) point about Sheridan and Delenn's "cult of personality," but instead the show treats him as if he's gone unhinged and ultimately we learn that it wasn't really him.Deledrius wrote: ↑Sat Oct 06, 2018 8:41 pmBoth Delenn and Sheridan get let off easy and treated as heroes despite the increasing unease they build up around them to consolidate their power. Delenn is hilariously a case of
JMS realized he wrote himself into a corner, Basically in his mind, He needed Sheridan and Delenn's relationship to be concrete and solid...
Airing Delenn's dirty laundry... With the stance Sheridan was consistently shown to have for the Minbari for what they did during the War
Basically would have broken the relationship beyond reasonable repair.
So it was a case of Keep the Happy Couple Dynamic and just let Delenn's secret sins remain secret or... Burn it all down.
JMS choose the former. So if you feel Delenn got away with shit... JMS will tell you , She did and it was on purpose.
____
On that note, I'd dig a look at SG-1's Jack O'Neill, Megatron/Beast Wars, Xanatos/Gargoyles and... Helo/ NUBSG

Liefeld has nothing to do with modern Deadpool. He created a rip off Spiderman design, and ripped off Wolverine's powers and origin, no one cared about the character, he was forgotten, and then OTHER writers came in and added every single thing people actually like about him, including the insanity and fourth wall breaking and partnering him with Cable.
It annoys me to no end that Liefeld keeps getting all the credit for the character when his part in the actual success was minimal.

Some of the character choices surrounding Delenn (and Sheridan, for that matter) are very strange. Delenn treats the people around her like dirt, isn't a particularly effective leader, and tends to flip between ruthlessness and being a friend to all life episode by episode. And yet, the characters around her treat her like Jesus/Valen (re)incarnate, the show bends over backwards to treat her as a sympathetic character, and beats the audience over the head with the revealed wisdom that she is the perfection of Minbari culture.
If Delenn had acknowledged flaws then she's be a flawed hero; if she had no flaws then she'd be a Mary Sue. A character that has flaws that are not acknowledged, however, is like a spider hatched with 16 legs: a bizarre freak of nature that should not exist.

One and a half bits short of a two bit writer.
