VOY - Virtuoso

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

This is what this episode reminded me of and it doesn't feel any less silly. :P
Weirdly, given how the people of Great Britain went nuts over Chinese, Indian, and Egyptian stuff in a row--I wouldn't be at all surprised this kind of happens all the time in the Federation.

Same, although I think the different species of the Federation are more likely to go crazy over each other's culture and history or that of neighboring interstellar powers, like 24th century humans being more interested in Klingon culture and their way of life than previous generations.

Yamaha started development on the first Vocaloid software just after this episode first aired. Coincidence?

I'm sure holodecks everywhere have the 24th century equivalent of Hatsune Miku, which is why the Voyager crew is unimpressed with the Doctor's singing.

You can always be promoted via seniority. And Kim was a bridge officer with a (theoretically) command function. He even gained experience as off-watch officer in charge. Given what we see in the show he was de facto 6th in command in what passed for a command structure.

So him not being promoted* is not a function of no room to promote him (Tuvok and Tom Parris {twice} were both promoted while retaining the same position).

*Any promotion given by Janeway would not have been de iure, it wasn't the 17th century RN after all, but barring serious problems either with Janeway or Kim it would have been rubber stamped, if only on length of service, once Voyager got home.

Hell, as the last Prime Directive episode left (it is the last, yes?), it should be fun just for the novelty of watching Chuck tear it apart for the umpteenth time. Mufufufufufufu...
There is no Homeward on the list. Do you mean Homestead? https://sfdebris.com/videos/startrek/v969.php

Commanding Officer can bestow acting rank, eg Wesley is acting ensign. CO reports to HQ. It takes time T for the message to get to HQ. If HQ cares enough, they will cancel that rank with immediate effect. It takes time T for the message to get back to CO. More often HQ says "Whatever" until the mission is complete; later HQ does the bureaucratic procedure whether the Acting rank should be confirmed.

But Star Fleet is NOT military.

Yukaphile means the TNG episode Homeward that has not been reviewed yet and has lots of innovation of the prime directive...

Personally I think of the Masterpiece Society as another TNG episode with a Prime Directive theme that Chuck has not reviewed (Chuck has definitely not reviewed it, whether the line at the end by Picard makes it a Prime Directive episode could be disputed). I think it nicely illustrates why you might want to have something like the prime directive...

Yeah and I'm the Queen of Sheba. It is an organisation with a military structure, military ranks, military equipment, military personnel, military training and a military purpose. If it is not a military, then it is only so because the meaning of the word has changed.

But if Starfleet is military then why can't they get military liquor discounts? :)

I'd argue that it is more things than a military so its not quite right as a term.

Its a diplomatic, exploratory, scientific research organization that also serves as the self-defense force of the Federation.
