For example, V is an allegory about Nazis, and right now Nazis are a hot-button issue.

Lots of Star Trek episodes have a political stance, however one-sided or poorly articulated, and that will lead to discourse on the related ideologies. =/

I know nobody likes the political discussions, least of all me, but it's entirely inevitable we'll end up having them on reviews for works as politically charged as V, or certain episodes of Star Trek.

Science fiction and fiction in general have always been political. They're usually not very specific lest they become dated but, given that fiction deals with the human condition and politics are part of the human condition, an enormous amount of fiction is going to deal with politics, at least broadly, sometimes even unintentionally (see unintentional fascist subtext in way too many works of many genres).

That said ... is it too much to ask that these discussions remain civil and follow basic rules of debate? We're all adults here (I'm assuming).

I'm in a vaccine debate group on Facebook (and boy, if you think political discussions can get heated, you've never been arguing with an Australian anti-vaxxer at three in the morning your time and getting told that you should never have children because you suggested that maybe starving a child to death is not an effective way to treat their cerebral palsy), and there are very strict rules there against ad hominem attacks, gish galloping, and most importantly that if someone makes a claim and is asked for a citation, they have to provide a citation or cede the point. Whether that can reasonably be enforced by the admins, I think it should be something we all strive to abide by.
