I have mixed feelings about this series. I saw a few episodes back in the day and I thought 'wow! this is awesome!' now as an adult, able to watch the entire series start to finish my response is 'wow, this is really dumb...'

I will be the first to admit there are some really good moments in this series like the attack on the island of when Rick is trapped and has to face the fact that he could die, and there is nothing he can do about it. But there are just some really dumb parts to, like when the Captain gives his report to the world leaders and accuse him of lying, or when they are being interrogated by the aliens and they can't put one-and-one together that protoculture is robotech. I mean how thick are you people?

That and the narrator smothers any life the story had by telling me what i already see, like i am too stupid to understand that Rick is having a nightmare or that a pilot was freaked out by an encounter with the aliens.

I have been poking around hoping to maybe find a copy of the original anime, to see if perhaps it does not have the same issues.

It was awesome when I was 9-10 when I was able to see it on TV mornings before leaving for school in Chicago (it was on super early and I had a 7:30am bus to catch). So it hit me on the head and I was target demographic in age so all was golden. I can still enjoy it well enough as an adult, I had a friend who had the first 4 parts on VHS as a teen so I was able to see it more than some. I imported a DVD set while I was living in the UK and still enjoyed it even then, but I feel this has a large part of nostalgia, as I do feel there are plenty of criticisms to be made. Minmei is terrible and annoying. People are real stupid at times. There are like 2 songs they use again and again in like 79 episodes. But you didn't have a lot of this when I was a youngster so I feel YMMV on this show, especially for a younger audience coming to this fresh.

It's better if you actually just watch Macross. None of the weird fusing together of three different series that have *literally* nothing in common. And the songs are much, MUCH better.
