Would Best of Both Worlds count? He gets slapped about by pretty much everyone onboard, some upstart saying to his face that she wants his job and if he's not gonna do whats necessary, then get out of the way. Picard's telling him to leave, Hansen is telling Picard to tell him to leave, Troi and Guinan are peckerslapping him into doing what he's supposed to do. Man's got a lot of pressure building up from top and bottom, and he's feeling it. Its less of punishing Riker in a hilarious way, but a more serious version of that, kicking him off of his comfortable spot and position.

On the flipside, does Family count for slamming his head into the reset button so hard, he's back to being douchebag extraordinaire?

no not really that character work, though i do agree that they should have made him the captain on his own ship by that point. Something ive been thinking for a while now is that a good way to do a star trek series might be to have it start off with the captain being promoted to admiral at the end of the season and the first officer being promoted to captain. Even structure the season with several episode having the commander being given some personal lessons from the captain on some things he was a little rough on and reveal at the end of the episode that the captain was grooming him to take over the ship as he had already been told about the promotion and the commanders previous commanding officer and starfleet sent him there to get him ready to command that ship. This would be good and this way some characters can be rotated out if need be and promoted to another ship, show up for cameos later ect. better than just killing them off. plus secondary mains like obrien can be promoted up to main cast if need be and it would work more like an actual ship and an actual navy does people get promoted and transferred all the time. plus it allows more character conflicts as new people get brought in to do a job and they may not be able to work together right off the bat.

as for punishing riker i thinking about episodes were he was humiliated the frame of mind might count as hes going through a mind screw episode
