Korra Season 2 Part 4

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Yep. In AtLA, bending had to be "learned". Aang was an Airbending prodigy, but he needed to learn Water/Earth/Fire. Katara was a Waterbender, but she needed to learn. Zuko was a Firebender, but he needed to learn. Toph was an Earthbending prodigy, but she learned. Even Uncle Iroh clearly became great by learning.

Korra was randomly gifted with Waterbending/Earthbending/Firebending when she was a toddler. And then she spent her entire formative years failing to learn Airbending, apparently through stubborn obstinate refusal to learn (perhaps due to frustration, or maybe because everything else had been handed to her so easily, although I think that might be being too generous to her character).

She was finally gifted with her fourth element, Airbending, when she saw Mako lose his Firebending, and the shock of it allowed her to get upset enough to "punch through" the concept of Airbending (even though AtLA suggested that that was more of an "Earthbending" mindset, and like the entirety of Korra's unyielding character, should be counterproductive towards trying to learn Airbending).

It's good that Unalaq only knew how to Waterbend after becoming the Dark Avatar, but Korra is the worst example for why he wasn't granted automatic access to all the elements. Korra never "learned" a single one of them. They were all attained through automatic "access granted" free unlockings.

Um? Korra could do elementary bending with three elements from a young age, but she still had to learn how to use them properly, as was seen when she was completing her Firebending mastery trials in the opening episode.

The Airbending thing can feel rushed, but she was at least shown coming to grasp the fundamentals of the bending style.

Just because he's the Dark Avatar, doesn't mean he gets access to all the elements automatically, remember. Korra had to go out and learn them, so naturally he would have to learn them too."

LOL, Korra learning how to use elements. Good one Chuck.
korra is a great bender theo just cus she struggled with air bending in season 1 dont change that

I do think one reason people were more confident about the Korra/Asami romance lasting over the Korra/Mako romance (beyond just the comic series coming out) was that seasons 3 and 4 helped us feel that Korra had actually grown up a little and matured through her experiences. She's much less like the person from early season 1 and early season 2 who'd fly off the handle at every little thing and get mad at her boyfriend/girlfriend over "not being on her side". It also helps that the show itself seemed very aware of how unlikable Korra was in season 2, given season 4's clipshow episode with the "Whose side are you on?" montage., so they are less likely to repeat their mistakes (hopefully).

Korra herself was the main reason her and Mako's relationship ended. Since Korra was the one who changed over the series, she's thankfully less likely to be the one stressing her relationships again.

It also helps that Korra and Asami's relationship was actually healthy and avoided a lot of romance cliches which is in direct contrast to Korra and Mako's relationship which was VERY unhealthy and full of romantic cliches. At no point throughout all of the first two seasons did Mako and Korra have anything even closely reassembling a healthy relationship.

He was rude to her for no reason when they first met, remained rude even when she offered to help him and his brother, accused Korra of using Bolin to make him jealous and later accused her of trying to frame Hiroshi to ruin his relationship with Asami. Acted possessive of Korra even before The Aftermath as he didn't like the idea of Korra spending anytime with a guy who wasn't him and started ignoring Asami when she lost everything.

And for Korra's part she didn't really do anything to earn Mako's respect or trust and because she had very little social interactions while growing up she didn't get why kissing Mako while he was in a relationship with Asami or how going out with her crushes brother could be viewed as a bad thing. And then we have her treatment of Mako in season 2 which the less talked about the better.

By contrast, while the two hit a few road blocks Korra was never openly rude to Asami and even thanked her for her and her father's help during the Pro-Bending Tournament and for Asami's part she was always polite to Korra and was always trying to help her in anyway she could. And as the series went on Asami proved to be the one person Korra could always rely on and Korra was always the person Asami could rely on too.

Throughout the last two seasons Korra and Asami proved to be the better couple which was only furthered helped by the two's wonderful chemistry so it was no wonder they became The fan-preferred couple even beating out Zuko and Katara in a number of polls. They're a honestly healthy couple that contrasted and complemented one another perfectly and unlike Mako and Korra, or really Aang and Katara IMHO, felt real and earned.

And that's why I think Korra and Asami are still seen as a great couple and I do look forward to Chuck's analyzing their relationship like he did with Homura and Madoka as it is a Huge part of the series. :D

Amusingly, it did this by having them spend almost no screen time together, so it was healthier largely by virtue of Korra having almost no opportunities to be her usual self and wreck it.

Korra and Asami spent 75% of Book 3 together and out of all the other main characters Asami is the one Korra interacts with the most in Book 4 and then comes Turf Wars where they spent almost all their time together. The Problem with Korra in Spirits is that she was poorly written but by Change and Balance they finally got her character down so she could interact with people without being a jerk like she was in the first half of Spirits.

It's healthier because they did spend a lot of time together and Korra could be herself around someone she was clearly comfortable with. Mako and Korra's relationship is unhealthy because they spent most of their time arguing while Korra and Asami Do have a few fights they are usually able to work past it in a way that feels realistic and earned.

TBH I think it was good to have the first relationship fail, not only did it break cliches, it also set up both one of the most important moments in Cartoon history, plus showing Korra Mako and Asami having a friendly relationship after this is also important,
You will notice i end my sentences with a , this will not change, you are wasting everyone involved's time pointing it out, this is just a quirk of how i ,unicate!
