Trigun

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

Ah the first four episodes... they're fun, but they are 100% filler. No really, episode 5 is where the manga starts.

The anime then follows the manga really closely up until about Monev the Gale showing up, introduces the gung-ho guns... and then goes off completely in its own direction again. I get it, the manga wasn't finished at the time and filler is a normal thing for anime, but its really strange that its basically just a 9 episode stint in the *middle* coming from the source material, while the start and end are completely different.

It's still a fine show, it paces pretty well to its 26 episodes, major mood shift in the second half aside. The characters are fun, the wacky bits are wacky, the action is solid and the badass bits do their job, and the animation is reasonably solid for tv animation at the time, and so is the imagination on display. Also amazing soundtrack.

But the massive tonal shift in the second half always rubbed me the wrong way. Its normal for comedy adventure anime shows to escalate and get more dramatic as things go, bu Trigun just started being... really dark. It's a weird mix.

I was really happy to see this series coming up on the schedule. I can't wait for the next batch of episodes. I've always liked Vash the Stampede as a character.

I love the anime, but I do think sometimes that it would be neat someday to get a second adaptation which follows the manga.

It was a bigger hit in America than it was in Japan. And my understanding is the movie didn't do great. So... I dunno.

Mandela Effect here as I thought the early episodes of this show had already been covered years ago, but maybe that was some other internet reviewer.

This was one of the first animes I was ever introduced to and one of the few I've seen all the way through.

I would say that those first 4 episodes are for world building and introducing characters and setting before story really starts so those are not fully filler.

Ah Trigun, I remember falling in love with this anime when I was in college after a college friend of mine (who was a massive anime fan) lent me her CDs of anime titles (yes she downloaded them, Egypt is less strict when downloading media through torrents)

Vash is definitely on my list of favorite Anime protagonists.

The fourth episode was actually an adaptation of the pilot manga before the author came up with a proper characterization of Vash, which is why he's a bit of a pervert in those early episodes compared to the manga and the rest of the anime after episode 5 and the insurance agents were not in the original pilot manga version of episode 3.

It's the 2003 adaptation of Astro Boy for me, which I admit is an odd choice for a number of anime fans but I feel it suits my taste in anime perfectly, a sort of superhero anime filled with robots that fits within the Mecha genre (which is my favorite Anime genre) with ton of episodic stories while still having a major long running plot in the background that pays off at the end of the series.

Plus I'm a sucker for anything connected to Osamu Tezuka's work, my favorite manga is Naoki Urawasawa's Pluto, which is a darker remake of Tezuka's own Astro Boy storyline The Greatest Robots On Earth, which also should be getting an anime adaptation next year (and yes I am super excited about that one after seeing the teaser they showed at a press conference)

Episode 3 does introduce an good debate. About the ownership of guns and that the good and the bad will wield them. The story here is the gun maker built the weapons used in a crime, which in the real world, people argue is their own fault. The other side is that good people with guns and the determination to protect themselves and others will always win against the bad guys no matter what. In the show, Vash fakes a gun to the criminals to force a surrender...even though it didn't quite work out but his intended plan was to make the entire town and the drunk grow some balls and take up arms. So even the threat of violence can stop more petty crimes from happening or ending them far sooner.

So even though this is a rather funny show, there are some good messages in there. Vash himself extreme in not taking a life, a common trope with specific heroes, especially ones with "the dark past". They want to make the world a better place...without taking the lives that live in it.

I agree, it was a well told story. Also a correction the episode I talked about that was based on the non-canon pilot manga was the fourth episode, my mistake. Also the original story ended with the leader of the avenging gang killing the former outlaw leader turned mayor in the duel but it ends the same way with the sheriff trying to kill the daughter and the rest of the survivors until Vash stopped him and ended with the Equality (aka Love and Peace in the original Japanese version) quote, which was an odd way to end on a comedic note considering the girl's father was killed right before her eyes.

The difference between the Anime and the Manga can be summed up in an old internet review

The anime is a tale of two paths/ideals

the manga is a tale of two souls, especially due to a certain someone being a much more active/pivotal player in the manga
