Yeah, when you think about it, it does seem inevitable that they'd eventually rise up and overthrow their oppressors after all those years of getting sent down to the planet to get zapped, eaten, or crushed by the alien of the week. Also explains why the command staff wear red shirts in the TNG-era series.
