Wow, no I had not - I see him now that I'm looking for him, but the Cardassian makeup was enough that I never spotted it before. Mind you, I'm not great at faces, if Anjohl kept quiet I'd have a lot of trouble reconciling him with Dukat (of course, if he didn't love his own voice so much he wouldn't be Dukat). I like Rusot while I dislike him - good writing, and maybe it's something John Vickery played up as well because there's a lot of the same in Neroon, he's an asshole but not just a weasel. I can well believe Damar and Rusot being friends, and in different circumstances - ones that didn't challenge his preconceptions - I can imagine Rusot being a hero of sorts, at least to his men, leading from the front and willing to charge into phaser fire for the good of Cardassia.G-Man wrote:So, did anyone else notice that Damar's second-in-command is Neroon?

if you want to learn about Exosquad And bat shit crazy Matthew Marcus, just start from here. http://sfdebris.com/videos/animation/exosquad01.phpDînadan wrote:I can't speak for Marcus
it's just to me anyway it seems that both Matthew Marcus and Gowron seemed to have the same kinda way of attacking things. Marcus did it because he wanted to be the one to save Earth from the Neosapiens rule, and Gowron did it for idiot political reasons. But both plans seem to be the same, attack with everything they got, and screw the consequences.
The only thing I didn't like about Martok was that he didn't stand up to Gowron. but seeing how klingons get all staby if you so much as insult their way of tying their shoes. I can understand why Martok would not go against Gowron.
Re: (DS9) When it Rains
There's also the fact that Martok likely didn't want to be chancellor and standing too firm against Gowron would have risked Gowron seeing it as a direct challenge, which means Martok would either have to defeat Gowron in combat or refuse and disgrace his entire house. Iirc he only accepts becoming the next chancellor because Worf talks him into it.thisithis wrote: The only thing I didn't like about Martok was that he didn't stand up to Gowron. but seeing how klingons get all staby if you so much as insult their way of tying their shoes. Re: (DS9) When it Rains
Gonna be a history pedant here. The Senate did not send Caesar to Gaul - their plan was very different.ScreamingDoom wrote: Basically, Gowron is doing what the Roman Senate tried to do to Ceasar when they sent him to Gaul. Caesar was sent there with bad equipment, no money, and effectively no support to legions who were disorganized, undisciplined, and demoralized by the Senate's mismanagement of the campaign. Ceasar was sent to fail in order to cut him off politically at the legs.
The fact that Ceasar turned the whole thing around in a few short years (he had to use his own private money to pay the troops at first since the Senate refused to do so) was shocking to his enemies in the Senate and they were blindsighted by his success.
In the late Republic (post-83), the Senate would assign provinces to the incoming consuls (always 2 consuls), to be distributed by lot (a process known as 'sortitio') between them. So in Dec. of 60 B.C., the Senate assigned the two incoming consuls for the year 59 (Julius Caesar and Marcus Bibulus) the province of 'silvae callisque' - the forests and hills of Italy. The plan was that Caesar would be given a nothing-job, which would make it impossible for him to recoup the massive election expenditures he had made and effectively prevent him from furthering his career.
Caesar responded by having a tribune, Publius Vatinius propose a law (the lex Vatinia) reassigning him the provinces of Cisalpine Gaul (Italy north of the Rubicon), Transalpine Gaul (modern Provence) and Illyricum (the Dalmatian coast), for five years (provinces were usually assigned for only one year, with commands being prolonged (a process called prorogatio) if necessary). The lex Vatinia was opposed by the Senate, but passed in the assembly, and thus effectively overrode the Senate's province assignments.
In fact, Caesar's army (3 legions) was unusually large. His province and the scope of his command was very large. In short, Caesar's command was a plum job - because of course it was, Caesar had picked it himself.

Yeah....Gowron was always a self-centered political schemer who was willing to do damn near anything as long as it helped secure his position. He wasn't devoid of virtues....as long as he felt secure, he was affable, even generous. He was no coward, either on the battlefield or in person. And he certainly had a knack for recognizing political opportunity. But he was never solid and pragmatic, or even anything close to that.

Re: (DS9) When it Rains
Even in the TNG era, anytime Gowron's political position is threatened, he reacts... badly. Consider:
Unification, Part 1: Acknowledge that the Federation helped secure Gowron's ascension to the Chancellor's seat? Fat chance! (Picard, in fact, is able to use this as a not so subtle threat that, if he doesn't get the cloaked ship he needs from Gowron, he's more than willing to ask one of his political rivals.)
Rightful Heir: When there's some Klingon who's come out claiming to be the second coming of Kahless, the Klingon equivalent of Jesus Christ, what's Gowron's response? Pretty much panic, followed by challenging said claimant (and he wasn't all that fond of the compromise, either).
So there is precedent for Gowron reacting irrationally to any perceived threat to his position. "House of Quark" does show him to be an able administrator (which I'm sure he'd consider an anathema), but his more negative traits do sometimes override his positive. And as we find out next episode, (spoiler alert): he's started to consider Martok a threat to his position. Never mind Martok has no political aspirations and just wants to be a soldier, to Gowron, his military successes and prestige are threats to his power and he must be dealt with.

If you want to color your spoilers to make them invisible, you need to manually convert the BBCode color to F8F8F8. (it's not one of the colors on the pallet). That shade of gray seems to match that of the background. It will be slightly visible in a quote box, though.Archanubis wrote:And as we find out next episode, (spoiler alert): Testing
