Could a secret like this be kept: Yes.
How long: Not sure.
Let's go with the F117. Creation began in November 1978 and was revealed in November 1988. Ten years for that piece of military hardware to come to light. Not a bad chunk of change time wise.
Now the lesson of this craft is why the SGC would want to keep things under wraps. Congress finding out a stealth plane even existed caused an uproar. They kept having hearings where they tried to have someone admit it was a first strike weapon so they could shut the whole thing down and put those who worked on it on trial. These same people that assumed the existence of a stealth plane of any kind would cause a nuclear war.
How would they respond to there are aliens out there that think they are gods and have armies and space based nukes?

Re: SG1-Heroes
One of the big issues for me is the rest of the world.
Stargate as a show is very America-centric in that it shows over and over again that the only competent people on Earth are Americans. The Russian teams that operate out of Cheyenne Mountain always die, the Russian Stargate program killed everyone, the French ambassador is the worst kind of Cheese Eating Surrender Monkey stereotype, the female Chinese IOA operative who is Richard Woolsey's opposite is backstabbing, cowardly and duplicitous, Camille Wray on SGU is shown in a very similar light (although every character there is an asshole so perhaps that is unfair).
And I do not really have a problem with that as surprising as that may sound. It's an American show. Dr Who often pulled the same stunt. It is only a problem in shows like Star Trek that is supposedly set when everyone lives under one flag.
Where the problem does come however is that there are several episodes that state that America is not holding up its end of the bargain (which for reference, is that Russia and China remain silent for a cut of whatever America finds out there). America is operating a whole fleet of starships and only eventually gives one to Russia in season 10 (which promptly gets destroyed by the Ori - see what I mean about what I said above?) The stargate is also technically on loan from Russia and yet America makes no secret of the fact that they are never going to give it back. Britain and France (the EU is never mentioned) who were also there when the Stargate program was revealed do not ever seem to get a look in at all.
The point is, keeping a conspiracy secret from your own countrymen is one thing, but keeping it secret when you are so often annoying the other countries of the world is quite another. Putin and the CCP got along with us a lot better back then, but come on, can anyone really see them going along with this? Public opinion would be their greatest weapon here.

Re: SG1-Heroes
I am not sure it was simply American centric, but SG1 itself. They show the other American teams regularly getting their hats handed to them. But they keep having other teams.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:55 pm One of the big issues for me is the rest of the world.

I know, show don't tell. But the show is Stargate: SG1 so we don't really get any other teams or the work outside that team most often.
While the secrets could be difficult to contain. I want to laud them for actually doing something with the recovered tech. SGC did not remain the same from season one. Which is why they did get ships and fighter craft.
Re: SG1-Heroes
While you are not wrong, the reality is if Putin, even 2000's Putin, had the Stargate and had no method to use it and America could be the only ones to use it... he'd hold it hostage and demand America aid him in the invasion of Europe, and America will be forced to aid him in the prevention of death of all of Earth, or fight him to the death for the Stargate.clearspira wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 8:55 pm One of the big issues for me is the rest of the world.

Science Fiction is a genre where anything can happen. Just make sure what happens is enjoyable for yourself and your audience.
