Well, I think most people think of Cool Runnings and try to connect that to Jar Jar. Which... again, there was no malice in mind at all. And if you find him annoying, that's one thing. But people who see a black person in him... well, they strike me as either guilt-ridden white liberals or racists themselves who conform to racist stereotypes, because if you see racism in an alien character that wasn't intended to be racist, what does that make you? It kind of reminds me of Chewbacca. He owes Han a life-debt, yet people don't call him racist against the Abominable Snowman, do they? LOL.
#SasquatchLivesMatter
But yeah, in all seriousness, I don't see how some people can think Chewie is more deep than Jar Jar. Jar Jar at least spoke. Chewie just roared and... sometimes acted like an animal. How is that meaningful? This is just failing to understand what racism truly is and Ahmed Best had every right to get pissed off over that. The irony here being that now people will begin screaming that Star Wars has gone full-blown SJW and introduces black stormtroopers (I've seen more than a few people drop the N-bomb with this, like literally "How can a nigger be a stormtrooper?" Just disgusting) and has a female lead. Well, which is it?! When you put in alien races, they scream racism. When you put in real races and fair gender representation, people still get mad. And then you wonder why I get so disillusioned towards the Star Wars fandom?

Re: Empire Strikes Back
Revenge of the Sith did cause a bit of a problem with the scene between Vader and Palps. Logically, the scene should've been more like this:
Palpatine: "I have no doubt he is the son of Anakin Skywalker."
Vader: "Son of Skywalker?! Wait a bloody minute, you told me I killed Padme in my anger."
Palpatine: "Er..."
Vader: "So where did this 'Son of Skywalker' come from? She couldn't have given birth if she was already dead."
Palpatine: "She... Er... Lost the will to live?"
Vader: "YOU SON OF A BITCH!!! YOU LIED TO ME!!! I'LL KILL YOU!!!!!!!!!!!"
Palpatine: "Oh crap..."
Vader force chokes Palpatine to death from across the Galaxy.
(With apologies to HISHE)

Re: Empire Strikes Back
I loved that scene, hahahaha.
I could appreciate Lucas wanting to expand on that, but the dialogue choice wasn't the best. But then SF Debris also admits Lucas isn't the best at dialogue. So then he still complains about the Special Edition edits. Like, what the hell? I may be harping on this a bit too much, but his comments towards the shuttle thing was so excessive and toxic that it killed the following jokes for me and left me feeling uninterested towards the rest of the review, especially since he presents it as "Even stalwart Lucas defenders like myself hate this!" I personally prefer the new line, and I like seeing Vader return to his ship with the old footage from the Death Star II landing bay. I think it's a nice little scene. It's certainly not worth screaming about for five minutes.

Seemed like a pretty pointless change to me, and one which undermined the tone.

Re: Empire Strikes Back
That's your view, and not one which should be hold as sacrosanct to the point someone feels entitled to verbally eviscerate it like it had killed your dog. Some people like it, and that's their right. Some think it's a nice addition. Even if SF Debris can't be more objective, he could have been politer. Again, it really ruined the rest of the review and the jokes for me afterward. I also think "showing the wampa" is not a bad change like he thinks. He cites Jaws, but for the life of me, I don't understand why it sets people off other than they don't think their version of Star Wars is "pure" anymore, in other words, being an entitled fanboy. But then, I'm not immune to that. My most beloved Star Wars is the 1997 Special Edition, and I just can't find that anywhere. All I can find is the 2004 Special Edition, which I just... don't want. I want the Star Wars I had as a kid, and it seems I'll never find that again. Which makes me sad, but I won't scream about it.

Re: Empire Strikes Back
You are missing the small but decisive fact, that you simply can not buy the original version anymore. Each and every newer re-release added special effects. Those who do not like them are forced to live with them.Yukaphile wrote: ↑Tue Oct 30, 2018 9:38 am That's your view, and not one which should be hold as sacrosanct to the point someone feels entitled to verbally eviscerate it like it had killed your dog. Re: Empire Strikes Back
Now this pain I can relate to, because I want the 1997 Special Edition, and I can't find it anywhere. It's just anything past 2004. Still, though, it doesn't justify trashing the Special Edition when some people do prefer that over the original. So many people bitch about it you won't find a single person who says "I prefer this to the one to the original" when they exist, so it gives off an impression of endless Lucas bashing. Looking at the original effects from the Battle of Yavin, I just can't be sad if it's lost forever, though, given how cheesy it looked. Or the original destruction of Alderaan. Yeah, yeah, ground-breaking at the time, whatever. It looked fake then and looks fake now. Why watch it? For enjoyment? You can't suspend your disbelief for something so artificial-looking. At least the original asteroid field looked more realistic. I can't blame poor Lucas for having OCD at least for the Battle of Yavin and Alderaan. You look at that, you think, "Special effect," not "real effects."

Re: Empire Strikes Back
The movie I saw as a child does not exists for me to see. It is not a released edition I can buy, they are all special editions with adjustments and changes. Regardless if the changes are good or bad they are still changes made worse because there is no reason we can't have the original beyond obstinacy.

Re: Empire Strikes Back
As i recall, the rights to the original version is owned by Fox, not Lucasfilm. In which case, George wouldn't have been able to release them without cutting some sort of deal.
Now with Disney buying Fox (and tightening its stranglehold on our collective pop-cultural mythology), I wouldn't be surprised to see a 4k theatrical edition released in the next few years.
In the mean time, there's always the Despecialized Edition.

Re: Empire Strikes Back
Brings to mind a bit of a story from Lindybeige in Britain once in Newcastle. Some college kids went by a store front with a bunch of toy monkeys set up holding instruments to look like a band playing. They raised a stink saying that the monkeys were subtle racism by the store owner to mock black people.
He quipped that it took a certain mind to see racism in such a thing, a racist mind.
