SG1: 2010

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

I like the idea of the Aschen, but they're definitely a villain type you can only use sparingly. An antagonist that never actually attacks you, but instead moves indirectly is a great counterpart to overtly military groups like the SGC and the Goauld. You can't just attack head on, you have to be sneaky in kind, which can be tricky to make work. The Ori did something similar, though they were more of a hybrid between the two.

I did like them though they are boring, which is how they are protrayed to begin with.

I kinda like the idea of them surviving the black hole address and seeking revenge on the Tauri. Maybe they ally with the Lucian Alliance.
I got nothing to say here.

Clearly this episode predicted the pandemic. The Gould are COVID19, the Aschen is Soros, the anti-aging treatment is the vaccine, and the plummeting birthrate side effect is just like Bill Gates' master plan to reduce Earth's population as a side effect of the vaccine. Study it out, sheeple!

(No, I'm not serious, and it's tragic that Poe's Law makes such a disclaimer neccesary.)

I'd like to see the Aschen confront the Tollan. Who beats who?

We live in a post Poe's Law society. Satire is dead, and politicians killed it.

Fianna wrote: Thu May 27, 2021 5:30 pmLike, I get that that having children and "perpetuating the species" are important to a lot of people, and I certainly wouldn't want someone to launch a mass sterilization campaign in secret, without humanity's consent, but I personally don't see much of a downside.
Generally, it's because its removing bodily autonomy and people who do want kids view involuntary sterilization as traumatizing as rape. The big thing about this is really that Carter's boyfriend is guilty of what was done by the Nazis and eugenicists to black, Irish, and Native women throughout history and he's somehow treated as understandable. If he is the guy who would do such a thing, he should have been gunned down or thrown through a stargate into a black hole. One of the most reprehensible people in the history of the show.
Fianna wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 5:08 am I don't see the point in preserving human culture for its own sake. Our culture exists for our benefit, to make our lives better. Creating brand new human lives in order to prolong our culture's existence ... that's like constantly buying boxes of nails and pieces of wood to hammer them into, solely because you already own a hammer and don't want it to go to waste.

As long as the people alive today are happy and allowed to live out their lives, I don't see how it matters whether any new people come in to replace us when we're gone.
A good chunk of the planet believes their own needs are less important than the belief they are benefiting others. Self-sacrifice is built on the principle that you are serving something bigger than yourself. Pain, horror, and death on an individual level being worth it for future generations, nations, or other groups benefiting.

After all, your life ends but the group shall carry on.
Fianna wrote: Fri May 28, 2021 6:40 pmAs I said before, the Aschen sterilizing humanity secretly, without consent, is still wrong. But if I lived on Stargate's Earth, and the Aschen had approached us openly with "accept mass sterilization, and we'll defeat the Go'auld for you, and also use our tech to raise your standard of living", I'd have eagerly voted for it.
Eh, I actually think that is a good moral dilemma because it's something that has happened so often in RL and is blatantly designed to destroy you. The Aschen are typical colonialists. They want to destroy the local culture and peoples while preaching they're bringing civilization and prosperity. They even scapegoat and use other enemies to do it. I wish the Aschen had returned but they played up the white Man's burden element and the fact that humanity on Earth is just a bunch of savages to them. There's a lot you can do with enemies who preach friendship while stealing.
