Lonely Among Us (TNG)
Re: Lonely Among Us (TNG)
Slight tangent - maybe the rarity of farms explains why the crew of Voyager expected their picky little airponics bay to provide enough food to feed them all. Also why they called it an airponics bay when it was actually a hydroponics bay iirc.

I don't expect most people to have a real idea about farming now, let alone know the distinction between airponics and hydroponics. 40 years ago my father was raising cows, pigs and chickens as well as 70 acres of popcorn in southern Illinois. He dies when I was a boy and we moved to Chicago; you ask most folk in the city where there food comes from it's the supermarket. Heck, most people now don't like to have their meat to have BONES because ick.
We must dissent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwqN3Ur ... l=matsku84

If it makes you feel better I've felt old for years and I'm not even thirty; in fact I think the first time I used the phrase "kids these days" I was eighteen.Dragon Angel wrote:...Really?Robovski wrote:Heck, most people now don't like to have their meat to have BONES because ick.

As for most people these days not knowing much about farming let alone people of the sanitised future, true, but remember they're supposed to be mostly scientists, so you'd expect them to at least know the difference between 'air' and 'hydro', plus the rest are mostly from the frontier where farming was likely more commonplace, so you'd expect some of them to notice.

Especially since Voyager computer records hold something like 16 "gigaquads" of data on sex. You'd think there'd be a few bits of text in there about farming and maybe even a sentence or two on the difference between aero- and hydro- ponics.Dînadan wrote: As for most people these days not knowing much about farming let alone people of the sanitised future, true, but remember they're supposed to be mostly scientists, so you'd expect them to at least know the difference between 'air' and 'hydro', plus the rest are mostly from the frontier where farming was likely more commonplace, so you'd expect some of them to notice.

Yes, that'll be an interesting one to explore.PerrySimm wrote:Now I really can't wait for "11001001"StrangeDevice wrote: I wonder if data degradation in memory storage is a problem for twenty-fourth century computer systems in the same way it is now?
That's a really good set of theories actually, particularly that last one. All of their colonial smugness worthy of the worst aspects of the British Raj is a product of the parasites, who have been generating such an atmosphere in preparation for their invasion. After all, it's one of the worst ways to make friends and the less valued the Federation seems, the better for them when they do eventually dominate that territory.FaxModem1 wrote:Yeah, it's best to view a lot of season 1 of TNG as not being the same world as everything else in Trek, a story being told, but not the real version as it collides with what is presented in later seasons. Because, as this episode is going on, the border skirmishes with the Cardassians are supposedly going on, they warred with the Talarians a few years ago, and are just now allies with the Klingons, with the Romulans being a sort of boogeyman. Heck, 'their big scary threat', the Ferengi, just emerged the previous episode. Out of universe, they really didn't have a handle on how to write the show, and it took them a couple seasons to fix everything.
If you really want a rationalization? In-universe? Let's say that the crew were in a state of shock for the first season after dealing with the godlike Q and his saying that humanity hadn't changed at all. That would make anyone defensive when your entire species is on the line and make you want to double down on what good traits humanity has. And to be fair, the UFP's quality of life is much better than anything anyone on this Earth has. And all the other weird crap going on with the Federation or the UFP? There are literally creatures infesting the highest branches of office, and are doing what they can to add to their numbers and not arouse suspicion.
I can't help but think of Crichton's "The humans are superior!" from Farscape whenever I revisit this era of the show.
Maybe all the biologists were killed during the initial-- Yeah, I've got nothing.ScreamingDoom wrote:Especially since Voyager computer records hold something like 16 "gigaquads" of data on sex. Knowing Janeway the suggestion was brought up but she slapped it down because potted plants wouldn't eat the Italian crew members.

He's told plenty of Obama/Democrat jokes. Where the hell have you been?lightningbarer wrote: When I see this from someone to tries to remain impartial in his reviews, I have to ask the questions like: where was this comedy when Obama was in talks with letting Iran have Nuclear Power Stations? How about a parallel between Obama interfering in international politics like Admiral Dougherty? Even the easy to spot Obama lead stuff parallel with Section 31?
Oh please. No one is obligated to meet some kind of a joke quota or be even-handed or anything. He made a pretty good joke about how things have flipped (which apparently some of you are too young to remember). Take it or leave it instead of whining about how he made a joke at Trump's expense. Don't you or anyone else dare to try to fuck up what SF Debris has going here. His reviews are good the way they are, and he doesn't have to pander to you or anyone else's petty little political sensibilities.I don't think you thought of it because you didn't consider it worth a joke. Because he was the side you support. (and possibly for reasons a lot easier than that)
And if you can't joke about your own side making potential fuck ups, you really shouldn't be making jokes about the other side either, just comes across as petty.

Same here. I kind of figured based on some of the stuff he's said over the years. I kind of feel the same way in that I don't think I quite fit into the "libertarian" box either.MadAmosMalone wrote:I'm also a libertarian which means the hard core conservatives of my friends and family think I'm just slightly to the left of Jane Fonda while the liberals view me as somewhere between Richard Nixon and Darth Vader. Re: Lonely Among Us (TNG)
See this is the eventual argument when you have such a strong stance.
"Either agree with us or go away"
Again, I never said Chuck made a joke at Trumps expense, I was very careful to never actually state that. I said that the argument was easy to make and something below par for him.
But I never said that he did.
I said I laugh at Trump jokes when they're done right. Just like I laugh at any good jokes.
What you're taking as me saying Chuck was attacking Trump was me saying that I thought attacking the whole "friends with Russia" thing was a lame duck joke.
Oh and the best way to get his reviews fucked up is to go autistically screeching at those you don't like.
But I won't do that, I like Chucks reviews and the fact that the forum is open again is a good thing. I don't want it ruined. It took forever to get the thing fixed.
But screeching like this isn't a good idea at all.
Because there are those online who revel in the REEE and want it to get worse.
It is part of the natural kekistani culture after all.

If I truly do get under your skin and piss you off, I'm at least doing my job by offending the right people.
And yes...I do not care if that offends
