I think Trip was talking about regretting things you didn't do, rather than things you did. Sort of a "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" idea, rather than guilt. I suppose that might be splitting hairs, given that both meanings of "regret" can haunt to the same degree.
And yeah, I agree about the scale problems in Trek. I think audiences share some of the blame for that, given how often I see that stuff justified with "rule of cool" but ultimately it is the film/show makers responsibility. The audience's imagination is not the deciding factor: they're ultimately passive. If there's a cool way to show more accurate scale, then it's the job of people making the show to imagine it. If they don't do it, it ain't getting done regardless.
