I thought The Outer Worlds was a bit over-hyped. A good game, true, but not the amazing alternative to Bethesda some people seemed to be portraying it as being.

Bethesda being owned by Microsoft (along with Obsidian) is why I'm hopeful for a remastered New Vegas. It can't happen for some time as both companies are busy with their own projects, but FO3 was released in 2009, and New Vegas was 2010. Starfield and Avowed are both probably due out in the next year or two. A 15th anniversary edition in 2024 seems feasible.

Outer Worlds was... alright. It wasn't a bad game by any stretch, but there was nothing especially memorable about it. It was almost as if Obsidian was so determined to fix the worst aspects of their reputation - of releasing buggy, unstable products due to being overly ambitious with their budgets & timelines - and scaled things back so much that it lost all of its soul. The concept had a lot of potential, and there were a few good moments, but overall the writing just felt obvious and flat. They played it safe, released an ok product that I enjoyed for about 30 hours, and then probably won't touch ever again.

I get not wanting to be known only for their bugs, but while New Vegas and KOTOR 2 were both incomplete products, they nevertheless remain stuck in my head because of the ambition of the storytelling. You don't build something great by playing it safe; I'd rather have flawed-but-memorable than ok-but-forgettable. The more I learn about game development, the more amazed at how much they packed into New Vegas in 18 months.

Obsidian turned their back on what made them great. They wanted to make something mainstream and had to drop what makes their games unique to do it.

The sad thing is how much the mentalities of men like Tim Cain have changed that they think the simplification of their games is a good thing.

Now there's a thread for Fallout New Vegas so we can talk about plot developments in Fallout 3.
Or... Fallout 4. I really like the new power armour system. They feel like they actually have weight and power now instead of just being like any other armour. And worse, in 3 and Vegas, the power armour is actually a bit of a waste of time as despite the hardship trying to acquire it, all it does is provide a small stat boost not all that much better than normal combat armour. And no fall damage! And a jetpack!
Complete protection against radiation too.

So will Chuck get all the companions?

Poor Chuck - trying to keep the peace between fanboys who are inevitably going to go bonkers for not saying their favorite FO is the best FO.

I'm on the FNV side of the divide, but also think my side has a larger (or, at least, louder) collection of jerks. Thankfully I'm not on Twitter and get to avoid the worst of it. While I prefer NV and would love for Obsidian to get another chance at the IP, I will always be grateful to Bethesda for reviving the franchise. And truthfully, FNV is only as good as it is because of FO3 resurrecting the brand and shifting it away from 3rd-person tactical (a genre I love, but which will never sell enough to merit a AAA budget).

I must wonder, did the frustration with weapon spread during his play thru of "Fallout 3" inform his decision to make a Melee + Explosives character in "New Vegas"?
