He called the SUVs Landrovers in the JP review, but I'm fairly certain they're just Ford Explorers.

They were Ford Explorers, but "landrover" is a fairly generic catch-all term for offroad vehicles of that style, at least in our age-group, where offroad vehicles were kind of rare enough that whenever an offroad vehicle was needed for a movie, there was a good chance it was an actual Land Rover.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 10:32 am He called the SUVs Landrovers in the JP review, but I'm fairly certain they're just Ford Explorers.

I kind of remember it as a generic term. Land Rover must have been pissed about that.Madner Kami wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 11:04 amThey were Ford Explorers, but "landrover" is a fairly generic catch-all term for offroad vehicles of that style, at least in our age-group, where offroad vehicles were kind of rare enough that whenever an offroad vehicle was needed for a movie, there was a good chance it was an actual Land Rover.BridgeConsoleMasher wrote: ↑Sun Jul 26, 2020 10:32 am He called the SUVs Landrovers in the JP review, but I'm fairly certain they're just Ford Explorers.
In the crime comedy RockinRolla, they use it as a signifier that the crew had been making money since taking scores in the 2nd act.

Why would they? It's cost-free advertising.

When a term becomes genericized, legally, the original trademark, at least as far as American customs, is effectively lost.
Then again, if people were already calling their rovers LR's then it would have been hard to TM in America in the first place.

Re: Areas where you'd respectfully disagree with Chuck
I was rewatching the ''Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang'' review of DS9 earlier and I have to say, whilst Chuck does have a point that Sisko is very much ignoring the sexism of the 1960s when going on his rant about how badly black people were treated during the same time frame as to why he doesn't want to visit Vic's (as Chuck notes, all the female leads are in servile or femme fatale roles) I feel as if this is a case of whataboutism on Chuck's part.
Just because Sisko is a hypocrite does not make him wrong and yet it seemed as if that is what Chuck was implying. I think there is an argument to be made as to whether a program that outright ignores the racism of the age is a good or a bad thing, particularly now in 2020 where we have discussions about whether certain statues and flags should remain standing. The DS9 writers were rather prophetic in this regard.
