VOY Elogium

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

VOY Elogium

Kes is 2 years old. WTF is Neelix a Roman priest shagging children? No it's OK, Ocampans only live 9 years, so she's 16 ish.

But then Elogium. Kes ain't even mature by Ocampan standards. The apparent maturity was just an illusion caused by the Anomaly of the Week (AoW). So Neelix is indeed a Roman priest.

Ocampa illustrate Trek's vision of Evolution. Maybe, each Century, the Swarm visits Ocampa and stimulates a breeding frenzy? Otherwise, Ocampans would have gone extinct by now.

Why is sexual maturity the measure of whether a relationship is "Roman priest" or not? The fact that Kes only entered her Elogium phase during this episode (and due to the AoW) doesn't really say all that much about her maturity as a person, rather than as a means of passing on genetic material. Heck, humans often become fertile/virile long before they are emotionally mature enough for a physical relationship, so even among humans, the connection between physical and emotional maturity is tenuous at best. It just so happens that human intellectual/emotional development lags behind physical development; perhaps the Ocampa have the process reversed?

Honestly, the problems with Talaxian-Ocampan relationships are the same as those that should have come up with Vulcan-Human relationships going all the way back to TOS (Hi there, Sarek!). How can a human whose life is measured in decades be considered "mature" by a Vulcan with centuries of experience? Is Sarek a Roman priest shagging children?

This episode is the intersection of 'Voyager is immature about relationships" and "You fail biology forever." Plus, that romantic link between Kes and Neelix was probably among the poorest of the early characterization decisions, a burden which did irrecoverable damage to the character of Kes.

Kes reaches full sexual maturity within a year. I think even SF Debris covered this. So Neelix being a "pedophile" is not the issue here because she is, for all intents and purposes, an adult.

Kes doesn't have a vagina. They mate by holding hands together and the baby comes out of a sack on her back. And put like that, the males probably don't even have penises that do anything else other than urination so that must have been a shock for her. And like Chuck points out in his review, technically Kes mates during a form of heat so she probably doesn't even have a sex drive as we know it. Which may actually explain why she is such a loving person because they value mental over physical love.

TL;DR: I don't think that they had a sexual relationship.

This is even true of some humans, so it's certainly possible.

I think someone edited their reply... because it sounded as if certain humans can only mate at certain times when they get into heat too. My bad.

Where was it referenced that Kes didn't have a vagina? I was kind of agreeing with the idea Chuck proposed in one of his reviews that the Ocampa almost seem like a species bred to be sex slaves because of how quickly they matured and how they stayed at sexual maturity for the majority of their short lives, and because it was basically impossible to get on pregnant by accident.
