Dark City (1998)

A film spiralling around memory, the nature of the human soul, and giant telekinetic space battles. Have we done this all before?

Is this a completely new review or just a reupload with better quality?

I feel a meta going on with how we're having a hard time remembering whether or not it's the original or not.

Yeah, that's not lost on me, TBH.

FWIW, I think it's pretty much a rehash of the original with some extra bits thrown in.

Twitter keeps saying the Intro/Production videos are what's tweeked. I mostly feel bad not noticing things were missing off the movie page.

I think the original was just 17 minutes long.

...or is it 12 minutes?

I liked the movie a great deal and thought Chuck did a decent review.

Well, old or new, I'm glad to see this review. Dark City was always a weird film for me, one that I've always been curious about, but was never able to get up the motivation to actually see it. At least with this review it gives me a better idea about it.

Planning to watch the movie for the first time (directors cut).

Should I watch the background video first or go in blind?

While i don't think the background spoils anything specific about the story, I think the best way to experience the film is to go in as blind as possible. I semi-recently got to show it to someone who'd never even heard of it, and I really don't think they'd have gotten nearly as much of a kick out of it otherwise.

Dark City is a film that I love dearly, and knowing the background of how it came to be has only enhanced that appreciation, but you only get one first time with anything, so let it be special.
