TNG - 11001001

While Datalore and Big Goodbye were solid enough, 11001001 always felt like the first episode of TNG that really showed off the show's potential without being weighed down by the first season's obnoxious quirks. The Bynars are also notable for being a new TNG alien race with some real novelty and stick the proverbial landing much better than the likes of the Ferengi did.

I like the Bynars in that they are an original species for Trek, but post-Borg they really take on a different interpretation that may not have been there originally. On the one hand, I guess you could say that the Bynars are the Light Side to the Borg's Dark Side; this is how hive mind tech could (theoretically anyway) be used for good. On the other, there is one episode of ENT where Phlox outright states that they achieve this by slicing out part of their brain at birth.
This is assimilation done against your will. They may not do it to anyone else but their own kind, and you may end up too brainwashed to realise, but they are not good people. It would have been interesting to see the Bynars again post Best of Both Worlds to see whether Picard is still so eager to save their civilization.
And here's some fridge logic i have been pondering: how do these ''couplings'' come about? Is that forced on them by the government or is it like a marriage? Is that what they do instead of exchange rings? Because it seems to me that divorce would be impossible. Not that you would want to anyway because the technology would probably make you unable to conceive of the possibility.

And as for Minuet, Riker obsesses over her for way the F- too long for someone he chats up for about an hour. His passion for her is so great in season 4's ''Future Imperfect'' that alien mind-reading tech confuses her for an actual woman.
We also see with Dixon Hill later on this season and with Joe Piscopo in season 2 that the tech to create fully interactive holograms is nothing special by this era.

I'd need to go back and check to see if they've truly got NPCs by then that don't get stuck in the door you're trying to get through.

Concidering he let a race die out for no reason, I don't trust his judgement on other races.

Agreed, Even though its been a long time since I watch "11001001", the Bynars are still very rememberable and genuinely felt like a truly alien species, rather than humans with a gimmick that we would normally get, it's a shame they never made another appearance beyond this episode.
And while season one of The Next Generation wasn't my favorite, I do agree with Chuck and think the music and cinematic feel are the strongest points to early TNG, the Enterprise-D docking at the starbase was really great, I love when we see the starships outside the windows and get a sense of just how big these ships are, and was a great homage to The Search For Spock scene as well, another thing that didn't happen a lot after the first two season of TNG.

When I watched this, I found the moment where Picard and Riker go to the weapons room to be unintentionally funny. Because with the dramatic music combined with the shot of the sign on the door, you'd think that they're going to arm up with some heavy-duty firepower, but instead they come out with the same dinky little, garage door opener-looking phasers they always use. It's just so anticlimactic.
