What if Wesley joined the Maquis?

I don't know if it's appropriate to post this her because Chuck has yet to review this one, but I recently rewatched Journey's End and a thought occurred to me.

Given Wesley's stated disillusionment with Starflet and his defiant stance in support of the settlers, is at all possible that under different circumstances he might have considered joining the Maquis? While I don't they want him in any fighting capacity, I could see them using him assistance in engineering weapons and repairing transports.
Taken this a step further, if Chakotay had been one of the residence on that settlement (or at least been in contact with someone there) then it's possible Wesley might have through a series of set backs wound up stuck the Voyager crew. It may seem far fetched, but let's not forget Torres was originally supposed to be Ro after she left the Enterprise to fight with the Maquis.

I don't know if this could have actually worked as the set up for good storylines. It's just something to speculate about. I'm curious if anyone has any ideas about why and how this could play out or if there's anyone reason to believe he wouldn't have done this.

I could picture him joining the Maquis. However, it would have had to be a season long plot, which might have made for a much better season 7. Lower Decks with Sito certainly would be a bit different if Wesley joined the Maquis was a background element.

I don’t think I would have wanted to see him on Voyager, partly because I think they would have screwed up his character, and partly because it means nothing as far as TNG goes. His joining would be a story to see from the POV of him, Dr. Crusher, Picard, LaForge, and the rest of the crew. Being on Voyager as a Maquis wouldn’t really be any different than being there as Starfleet.
