Civil Defense (DS9)

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

They didn't wipe the station's computers before taking the place over? Or maybe they shoulda just installed new computers, nice, friendly Federation computers, computers that don't replicate phasers and start blasting people.

For some reason I always remember this episode as a Season One episode. It feels so much more like it ought to be in S1.

I think the episode is a lot more effective once the characters and the audience have gotten use to the station.

This one was always one of my favorites from Season 3. To me, it's one of the funniest comedy episodes the series did, even though it's not strictly a comedy episode, if that makes sense. That moment where Dukat gets his comeuppance as he tries to leave the station was pure gold. :D

This episode (probably because of the prominence of a Bajoran officer and Chief O'Brien while the command staff is in shambles all over the place) reminds me a lot of "Disaster" the episode in which Troi takes command after a singularity hits the Enterprise.

I'm pretty sure they discuss that throughout most of season 1 and 2. It's probably not as simple as plonking down new workstations in every office, the station is massive and has a lot of little fiddly bits and systems everywhere, so after a certain point you might as well just ask "why not scrap the station and build a new one from scratch" to which the answer is obvious: we HAVE a perfectly functional station, and best of all it was FREE, why get rid of it?

(Though given the events of a couple of episodes, you do have to wonder how the thing hasn't plunged from orbit yet)

They probably did rip out a lot of the computers and software over concerns of spyware and viruses left on the network from the Cardasians. The idea that this file was in the ore processing section of the station is a bit of a question mark, that is probably why the computers down there were not wiped or replaced. Who would hide a station security file in the controls of a conveyor belt that fed into a smelter?

They were not using the station as an ore processing facility so they did not work over the equipment.

I do remember one episode O'Brien described the ridiculous hacks he had to do to get the Cardassian equipment to play nice with Federation software, and one of the cardassians (Garak or Dukat, don't recall which) was aghast at the kind of butchery he was performing

Are you sure you're not thinking of the female Cardassian scientist who thought he was hitting on her because of all the bickering they were doing; iirc she expressed frustration at the ludicrous number of backups and redundancies Federation protocol demanded.

But, yeah, I also think there was mention at some point that Cardassian and Federation computers/tech didn't interface that well hence why so much Cardassian tech was left in place (think that even carried on into the Dominion War arc - wasn't the whole reason for the events of Empok Nor due to needing parts that couldn't be replaced with Federation made parts?).

Also, it's probably worth remembering that the station wasn't Federation property; it belonged to the Bajorans, the Fedeeation were just 'hired' to manage it and maybe they wanted to keep as much Cardassian tech as possible due to so much of it being left behind after the Occupation rather than have the Federation replace it with their tech and make it so only the Feds could keep it running, thus making them reliant on the Federation (iirc there was occasional mention of some Bajorans worrying that by bringing the Federation in they'd traded one set of overlords for another).

THAT'S right, I remembered it was a cardassian, I'd just assumed it was one of the regulars.
