I gotta say, while the robot comic relief sidekick is deserving of the grief Chuck gives 'em, they're still more helpful than Mushu from Mulan.

Damn, I'm impressed that Chuck managed to get around to reviewing this film. I thought that everyone forgot about it.

I only watched this film once, like 20 years ago, so my memory of it it's fuzzy. I was very confused by the way they treated space as an ocean, since it's both and neither at the same time, but I eventually got over that, since it's clear that the writers went for pure fantasy. The characters, except for John Silver, are kind of forgettable, which I think it's what hurt the movie, if the characters aren't memorable, then they're kind of pointless. I was struggling to recall anything about the main characters, since none of them do anything of importance. Even the main hero of the story doesn't do much, and he's just there for the ride.

Other than that, the visuals are great, and I kind of liked that crescent space station design.

I quite enjoyed the movie and it's steampunk fantasy take on the subject matter.

It's a great Spelljammer movie.

To be fair, Mushu has his moment of humility in the climax, helps move the plot forward by forging orders from the general and actually has some funny lines.

I never properly watched Treasure Planet, it came out during that period of my life when I was acting like I was too cool for cartoons and just never revisited.

Does make me wonder what's the most afterthought animal sidekick who is clearly just there before well the main lady has to have one as it's expected by that point. The one in Princess and the Frog maybe?

I think everything they did after Aladdin falls into that problem, more or less. Same with the genie-inspired "anachronistic joker" which may also be the sidekick (Mushu) or the antagonist (Hades).

By that point they weren't including those because they served a purpose but because they mistakenly believed it was part of a successful template.

Say what you like about Mushu, but most people missed him in that humourless, Chinese government pandering remake. I also missed having a likeable protagonist who actually had a hero's journey and not someone who was born with the Force and spent her childhood jumping off rooftops.
