I was always disappointed by this one. With this title, there really should have been space bunnies.

As a economic person who's entire life is financials, gotta say, this guy was pretty dumb. You don't determine the worth of a product, the consumer does, and too bad for you, that they more than determine YOUR market when your market is SELLING them things.

You can tell social media does not exist on his planet. I personally think that you would be crocked out of your gourd to spend $10,000 on a handbag that was made for barely a quarter of that, and yet because of its name, people will sell their parents just for a photograph on Insta of them holding one. Same with fashion in general tbh. I'm a ''buy a pack of three for a tenner'' sort of guy. I've never understood the appeal of buying something because of the label.

But like you say, these people have determined that because someone has stitched the words ''Louis Vuitton'' into it, that thing now has worth and the company is only too happy to agree with you.

Edit: Actually the funny thing about fashion is that the genuinely rich don't actually bother with trying to ''look rich''. Look at Zuckerberg and Musk in their (no doubt expensive but still normal looking casual clothes), or King Charles in his tailor-made suits. Genuinely rich people know that tailoring is far more important than brand. Its the poor people trying to look rich on credit card debt that mess around with chains and handbags.

Yes it generally does serve as a signal of what one can simply speaking afford. Generally anyone is subject to the condition that you should constrain your spending on things that aren't a financial burden to any extent. A Louis Vuitton bag by all superficial means will fit you into a scene, but the fact that someone takes a loan out to get one is both an inevitable and embarrassing reality on the very other hand.

Even a quarter of that would be $2,500. I highly doubt they cost anything near that to make.

Google says $57 to $800 depending on the materials. Name brand bullshit and all that.

But also remember we pay alot of money for pieces of shiny carbon that really isn't that worth that much. Realistically speaking.

My favorite part of this episode is when the guest star, observing that the missile didn't go off because it was faulty, says "Maybe I should offer them a refund". All in all I really enjoyed this episode.

I do love that line, probably one of the best ones to come out of a fairly middling episode.

The whole "everything is a set amount above cost" bit makes a lot more sense once tis explained that their main customer is the Dominion military. It's probably a command economy in all but name.

There is a subtle difference in writing between post-season 3 TNG Worf and DS9 Worf. Maybe it is rank, maybe it is the fact that Picard kept him on a different leash, but DS9 Worf seems a bit more inclined to be ''what are human emotions?'' than TNG Worf.

I'm just finding it hard to believe that the Worf who courted Troi, the Worf who delivered Molly O'Brien, the Worf who regularly attended poker nights is the same Worf who seems so socially inept at dealing with humans as he does in this episode.
