This is clearly what they were going for. Which is why it's completely idiotic... since every indication is that this is how the ship was made to look, long before it went to hell and back.
It's an early example of the currently-mainstream television disease of designing from the back end of your story in reverse. If you apply your brain, it falls apart when played in chronological order.
