Depends on the reality shows some are informative (ex Kitchen Nightmares and my cat from Hell) Some are just trash (The Bachelor/Bachelorette)

I blame the rise of streaming services and the decline of passive viewing.

The few reality shows I used to watch were more about doing a specific task, like tanked in which an aquarium company makes elaborate fishtanks for celebrities rather than one about specific personalities since those always exaggerate the drama, not that tanked is "real" or anything either, just the way they make the tank was interesting to me. I do not understand why I should care about Bachelor or Survivor really.

Then you got the shows like Pawn Stars that makes it appear that it is informative. And it can be. It's more like click bait reality show though. Bare basic historical fact and obviously staged.

I remember two things where I caught them. One was where a guy dragged a ejection seat into the shop and everyone was saying it was from WW2. No. The ejection seat was barely in its infancy at the time. And I knew exactly what that ejection seat was since I worked on them for years. It was a GRU-7 ejection seat made for Intruders, Tomcats and Prowlers.

The second one was a mandolin that had 'The Gibson' on the headstock. My Dad is an expert on stringed instruments and I remember him yelling at the screen calling them idiots. All because they said something that my Dad instantly knew to be bullshit. Something specific about how 'The Gibson' wasn't right somehow.
I got nothing to say here.

The rise of streaming tabloid news channels seems to be filling at least some of that gap for people. Reality is the ultimate reality show of heightened drama. It's got everything you need: heroes and villains, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

I'm not sure about that. Seems a lot of people put on YouTube's algorithm and passively view that all the way down the rabbit hole now instead. Same beast, just a lot more effective.

I saw a reality gameshow when I had insomnia in Reno called The Hustler. Craig Ferguson hosts and it's like clue and people have to guess who the hustler is based on trivia consistency. Cool stuff.
..What mirror universe?
