Don't bother. If you don't align with someone else's simplistic black and white good versus bad extreme vision of the world you must be the opposite extreme is how it seems to work these days. There's no willingness to look at things from someone else's perspective - empathy in all but the most trivial sense is dead, as is nuance and shades of grey. Everything must be viewed in terms of 100% saintly or 100% evil, there's no room for even 99% of one and 1% of the other (try pointing out something even slightly positive about something that's overwhelmingly negative and be prepared for a torrent of abuse about how you're trying to agree with it or defend it).Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 5:33 amPoint granted. Take Alien: Covenant. It has a gay couple in the story that doesn't have to beat you over the head with it. And I LOVE that. I've had issues with Alien: Covenant script-wise, but that isn't one of them.
That's not woke, that's classical liberalism.
We need more dreaming for egalitarianism. Not one tip scaled over the other. But I perhaps expressed it poorly, so I will convey my apologies for that. I have communication issues. As no doubt everyone here can tell.

Remember that '80s anime, Dirty Pair? That inspired elements found in TNG? "1 in 10 people have had a sex change?" Why should that bother me? That's classical liberalism like the kind you'd find in Mr. Banks' Culture novels. No, I'm not against that, just don't interfere with the quality of the writing, be subtle, not heavy-handed, and stop trying to sell to the casual trend-chasing customers, but that's all they know how to do now to make up for their own glaring flaws in the 21st century gilded age.Riedquat wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 4:07 pmDon't bother. Sadly, even that is enough to get the obnoxious howler monkeys screaming that 'everything's too damn political these days!' Two types of people, apparently, exist in this world: cisallohet, Anglo-Saxon, neurotypical, men and 'politics' and 'politics' has no place in fiction. Right...?Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 7:30 pmRemember that '80s anime, Dirty Pair? That inspired elements found in TNG? "1 in 10 people have had a sex change?" Why should that bother me? Anyway, while I agree with your general sentiment of 'just let people a chance at life', whenever I hear someone complain about 'woke' culture, I see these dimwits losing their damn minds when a new film isn't just an old film but with better cameras and effects. When I hear people complaining about 'pandering' I see these guys complaining about 'politics'. While it can be a bit much at times, I've never seen a film become a lesser work just because the creative team was actively conscious of the makeup of their cast.
Besides, as I've always seen it, it's better for me to be pandered to than the guys who'd lash out at me for being 'so damn political'... just for existing. If the corporate bean counters think it's more profitable to cater to 'politics', then SOMETHING is going right.

Art should be political. It also needs the right to be as absolutely not politically correct as it can be.
A good example of "woke" I loved, in its proper place, before woke was ever a thing, from SGA. Brain Storm. Rodney makes it clear, global warming is not something one person can stop, we all have to contribute - and there's no small irony to an environmental activist shilling out in ginormous jet carriers that release as much CO2 as anything.

You're going to need to get more lucid before I can engage with anything you say in this thread, Matt Parker and/or Trey Stone.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 2:39 am Art should be political. It also needs the right to be as absolutely not politically correct as it can be.

And when I hear THAT, I'm seeing an edge troll doing a rendition of The Aristocrats with the challenge of using every racial and sexual slur known to man plus The Seven Words You Can Never Say on Television five times each.Captain Crimson wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 2:39 am Art should be political. Oh, and just to clarify, 'politics' in my last post meant people who are NOT cisallohet, Anglo-Saxon, neurotypical, men. The joke is that some idiots believe that the mere existence of such people in any media means the creators of that media are actively pushing a political agenda.

If it can be a bit much at times then you have seen that.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 12:54 am While it can be a bit much at times, I've never seen a film become a lesser work just because the creative team was actively conscious of the makeup of their cast.
A big part of the problem is that so many people have been yelling about it you can't do anything straightforwardly without motives being questioned. When Red Dwarf was first made and half the main cast were non-white no-one thought anything of it because it was never raised as an issue. Now it would be "They're just casting them to make a point about how good they are." And these days sadly that might be the case. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Really it shouldn't matter as long as someone's right for the role, there shouldn't be any "We need more / less of these people."

Or more likely thier were just as many or more people that hated it, but because the internet barely existed and there was no way to monetize hate about a BBC sitcom they kept quite.Riedquat wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 11:43 amIf it can be a bit much at times then you have seen that.ProfessorDetective wrote: ↑Thu May 06, 2021 12:54 am While it can be a bit much at times, I've never seen a film become a lesser work just because the creative team was actively conscious of the makeup of their cast.
