DS9 - Visionary

This forum is for discussing Chuck's videos as they are publicly released. And for bashing Neelix, but that's just repeating what I already said.

The thing is that the weapons we saw fire look like nothing like Fed tech but Cardie tech. It makes me wonder if they custom made those or that is what Fed tech looks like but with a Cardie paint job. Or they were always there but O'Brian upgraded them with enhanced power/reload/weapons etc.
That is a most interesting thought!

Really liked that they used the quantum singularity as a plot point, given how in previous TNG episodes it was already established to cause all kind of funky timey wimey stuff.
Although, it does make me wonder: given how easy it is to track the QS, won't that be a huge flaw in the Romulan cloaking technology?
I'd imagine the problem is its proximity - space is big, so you can't necessarily track the Romulan quantum singularity unless you were right on top of it, which isn't likely unless in a case like this where they were probably staying close to quickly beam their agents off and destroy the station as quickly as possible.

One possibility I'd raise is that it wasn't even 2 km out, so much as the disruptive wave, and Dax just expanded her search pattern.

Kinda suggests that Starfleet can detect cloaked ships once they know they are looking for them. Maybe Starfleet learned it from seeing the Dominion doing it to the Defiant?
I got nothing to say here.

Back when Kirk and Spock stole a Romulan cloaking device, it was mentioned that there was (or would be) a perpetual arms race around cloaking technology. One side builds a cloaking device, so the other side builds a device that can see through cloaking devices, so the other side builds even better cloaking devices that can't be detected, so the other side builds even better detectors that can see through the even better cloaking devices, and so on and so forth.

Cloaking devices have always been findable once they started looking, in pretty much every episode when facing an enemy using one. That is probably why The Federation saw no use in developing them, build a better cloak and someone will build a better sensor. And Starfleet is building better sensors every day just for the science missions alone. It is the most one sided arms race in fiction, it has only one runner and they keep coming in second.

Yep. Star Trek cloaking devices are completely overshadowed by Federation sensor tech. Unlike in Stargate where the Ancient and Goa'uld cloaks render you undetectable to all but the McGuffin Of The Week, Star Trek cloaks tend to require a ''remodulation'' or a ''quantum filter'' and that's that. Only the Reman cloak seemed to be perfect - but I wonder what a few years of Starfleet engineers did with the Enterprise-E's sensor data.

And really, the Federation has always been technologically superior to everyone up to and sometimes including the Borg in terms of offensive capability. The Genesis torpedo, red matter, the long range photon torpedoes from the Abrams reboot, the anti-Borg weapons that future Janeway came back with. Not to mention their ability to come up with shit on the fly such as the Species 8472 nanomachine weapons and casual time travel.

Going to war with the Federation is normally akin to going to war with Superman.

Unrestrained bloodlusted UFP with all morals off could basically take on the Ancients under similar conditions, and then the two morph into the Time Lords and start a whole new series! 8-)

That's military technology for you, the only reason everyone's got guns and bombs and were now seeing drones and so on, instead of chucking rocks at each other. Relatively speaking nothing's changeed since the rock-chucking days. Just a higher chance of getting other people nearby killed.

I heard a theory once that intelligence and war go hand in hand because necessity is the mother of invention. All of these things were first developed for war or because of war: Space rockets, nuclear power, plastic surgery, canned food, duct tape, computers, satellites, radar, freeze-dried coffee. And these are just the tip of the lists I Googled.

It actually seems as if we owe our whole society to war. That is not to say it is the only way, but I wonder how a truly peaceful world would have developed. Is there a motivation to leave the Garden of Eden?
