When you already have SO MUCH Trek content out there, why not let one show deviate from the formula a little?
"Deviate. from. Formula." I get the individual words. But when you string them together like that is makes no sense.

Clearly that's the thinking the suits have. I disagree, but as long as they all seem to think so, we're stuck with prequels that look hundreds of years later than the previously-latest point in the show (and that includes time travel).

Imagine if they'd done that with Solo. "Fans will complain about everything!" is a tired refrain. Never mind how successful Mad Men and other period shows have been.

To be fair, it's not as if they retconned the early history of Trek before, first wedging in a WW3 and then straight up showing no war in the 90s...
To be fair the Eugenics Wars took place in Eurasia, and the war ended in 1996, which is just when that Voyager episode was set. But yes, at one point it was referred to as the third world war, until it was retconned in "Encounter at Farpoint" as taking place in the 21st century, making that and the Eugenics Wars completely separate.

How can you deviate when people aren't sure what the formula is. Lets see Discovery a show that change what it is each season, piccard a show about an individual helping the next generation, and lower decks funny takes on the old star treks shows. How is there one formula in that?

How would the Eugenics Wars factor into Trek worldbuilding?

I'm assuming they take place in the 90's. This is a weird case where you'd have to do an alt-history of reality specifically to honor canon, which I think would be kind of fun.

You could have reconstructions of stuff like the Oklahoma federal building bombing, GMO politics, the BP oil spill, Iran Nuclear deal. All to fit a dystopian seeding for the future perils of mankind before Star Trek socialism is enacted.

Yeah pretty much. How to put it into worldbuilding though.

Well, they could have spent some time showing us the Emerald Chain...

We got some hints of this in the final episode(s), but then it all just went away again.

IMO, the biggest missed opportunity was that gap between episodes one and two in Season 3.

Outside of Discovery, though, as far back as TOS it seems no one's been particularly interested in pushing the worldbuilding aspects. We get little tidbits here and there, but nothing overtly intentional. Not until DS9, and it still didn't cover everything.

They all have the same basic formula of trekking through the stars. Assignment: Earth, while being of the Trek universe, would literally be breaking from that formula altogether because there's not traversing through space. That's the same deal with the Eugenics Wars, which only involve spaceships at the very end via Khan's sleeper ship.
